The updated HD 28185 System
Well I have been busy cleaning up and making new textures for the HD 28185 system. I managed to find a copy of the long lost Asteriod belt addon that I had lost when my hard drive got formated. I have been tweaking it it for a few hours and worked out a few bugs. What it is going to do is place an asteriod belt between the first and second planets in the system. I figured that jupiters gravity had help create an asteriod belt in our system then something similar might be seen in a system like HD 28185. The disision to place the belt were I did was the simple fact that any planet between the first and second would be disrupted do to planet B's large mass. There are only 150 aseriods at this time but I plan on adding more as time alows. I will make the asteriod addon available when I finish the rest the HD28185 system update. I should only be a week or so. I hope.
If anyone doesn't know about the HD 28185 system here a brief synopsis.
The system as we know now has one very large gasgiant with 5.3 jupiter masses( meaning it weighs 5.3 times what jupiter wieghs ) and it orbits in almost the same area around HD 28185 that the earth does around the sun. It also has the most cicular orbit yet found of any extrasolar planet.
The star is very similar the sun and has its habitable zone in the same region as our suns. What this means is that any moons that orbit HD 28185-B would be placed in the habitable zone of the star and if they were large enough they very well could support life. This were my idea with this system came into play. I thought it would be neat if I could build an entire solar system around a star and have habitable moons orbit the gasgiant. I seached through all the systems on several websites and kept comming back to HD 28185 as the best canidate. So thats were I started.
HD 28185 is in the northern hemisphere below Orion in what I believe would be considered Eridanus. Its about 120 light years away and can't be seen with the naked eye. Well I think that takes care of that. I have some picturers of the reworked textures in action in my gallery. You can check it out here http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/gallery/view_ ... e=DEdwards

Well here is a major overhall of a texture. No more Vocanic moon texture based on Venus. This one is completely new and looks like no other world I have made. Take a look.
It will be in the HD 28185 system with the others. I am making 2 versions of the add-on. A higher res version and a medium res one. As I continue to update I will post more pictures here and of course any and all coments are welcome.

Yah its definetly still a work in progress. When I create the nightside map I use a contrast enhanced map of the original texture so all the light colors become the lava. I am going to try somthing a little different and see how it turns out. I am going to try reversing some values so the lava is in the darker areas instead. I also still need to work the poles over as there is a great deal of stretching going on there. But for the most part I am happy with the results. You would never guess were this texture is built from. I'll give you a clue, its from somewhere on the earth.

Heres another shot. Theres alot of detail here. I turned off the nightside for these shots.
Make that 2.
[/list]
I am going to soften the bumpmap some and dail the bumpmap setting down a hair but it does have a breath takeing charm to it. At least I think.
Has anyone figured out were this is on earth yet.

Where are you getting your textures Don? I get mine here: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images_topic_index.php3?page=20&topic=land
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

Same place. That picture I posted was from somewhere else but its of the same region. I didn't use this picture for the texture but one from the site you mensioned. Again the picture was color enhanced to give it the look I wanted and of course for the wraping of the texture I had to clone in some picture data and use the photoshop healing tool here and there. Lucky for me in that big rust covered oval area the is a real volcano that shows up real nicely in the texture if you look close. I am still working on it and will post more pictues as I go along.

OK 2 new shots of the updated volcanic moon texture. I have reworked the texture doing aditional color changes and fixing the problem Rass brought up about the lava. The lava now only shows up in low lying areas of the texture such as cracks, canyons, rifts, valleys and in volcanic craters. Also because of the change the lava doesn't show up as much in the daytime. I am still considering if I should add just a few impact craters here and there. I did end up with an artifact that I can't seem to get rid of. There is a mountainous region that looks like it has snow or ice on its peaks. I gues this isn't that unplausible so I think I will just leave it there. Maybe I should call it fire and ice. Well here are the obligatory pictures to show the results.
As always all coments are welcome and of course if you see this Rass give me your opinion of this version.

Don, any chance you might put the volcanic moon up for download ?
Please....
I really would love to see that in motion.

Darkmiss,
Its just ready yet. There are still a few isues I need to work out mainly the polar regions. Please give me a little time here. I can only work on a texture for so long and I kind of get bord with it and then I jump to another one. I am shuffling around several textures right now. I am working on the Volcanic Moon, BlueMars, GreenMars, and the specmaps that go with them. Not to mention a new frozen planet texture to go with the planet "F" in the HD 28185 system. As I work on these textures I start getting new ideas and than I have to stop and save then and then try the ideas and see how they work. PTC (planetary texture creation) is very time consuming as I am sure you know. I have always shared my creations unless something happens and I loose them. That was what happened with the last update to BlueMars, and HD 28185. I a inadvertantly formated my hard disk and whiped out all my work. Needless to say I am more careful about keeping everything backed up.
So the answer ins't no, just not right now.

sure, no rush.... just hurry
I like the texture as it is now, I hope it doesn't change too drasticly

Actualy the color has shifted back and forth a few times. I seem to have lost most of the really bright Io look and feel when I had to figure out how to fix the lava problem. It now resembles the first posts of the new moon I had put up. I am going to work just a little more to see what I can do to get back the color than I am going consider it finished. I will make it available for download seperatly but I really wanted to keep all the textures for the HD 28185 system together. I will post new pictures one way or another of the final result and then we will see what kind of demand I get. Wish me luck.

Heres another new texture. This time for planet "F" of the HD 28185 system. This planet is earth type or a terestrial. Its orbit being a little farter out than Mars means this planet is locked in an iceage. It also has a moon 1/3 its size but its on the other side in this screencap. Have a look.
Now you might say it looks somewhat familiar. Thats because it based on the volcanic moon texture that I am still working on. This texture is litteraly a reversal of the vaolcanic moon texture. There won't be any glowing from its night side though.
