I've already tested these add-ons and given Ulrich the thumbs-up
there John. Dunno why it's taking so long, but Ulrich is a busy guy, so
it may take a bit.
These are very NICE textures by the way.
Take care, Bob
PS. - You may notice that MY little add-on is still in there too.

Well, since you are in such a hurry to get the things listed, how about
uploading your OWN screen shots so that
I don't have to again.
Grumble, grumble...

Sorry to poke you in the eye here Bob, but since I know you are a man with an eye for details I thought I had to direct you to a small typo from the CML:
Level 4 (Part 3) PNG
Level 4 (Part 3) PNG <-- Should be part 4
Cheers, Anders

I have an alternative SSC for your addon John, which allows it to be used as an Alt-Texture.
Code: Select all
AltSurface "John van Vilet 1k_2k_4k_Moon" "Sol/Earth/Moon"
{
Texture "Moon.*"
}

Got it Anders... Thanks very much for the input. See what happens
when I let someone else do the work? Chaos.
Now, I will also have to go back and explain the entire add-on again
since no one EVER does it correctly. Sheesh! Maybe tomorrow.
I'm beat... And by the way, THANKS for the screen shot, John. It is
now installed on the ML.

Hey, hey... NO criticism from me here, my friend. I already KNOW how
busy you are, so I will NEVER criticize your work on the ML. By the way,
if the originator of the work does a good job when
describing the
upload, then MY work is no longer necessary, so rest easy my friend.
One of these days, we'll beat our ideas into the heads of the
add-on creators.
Or, maybe not...

Don't worry, Bob. I did understand you well.
I just wanted to repeat what you always say.
So to say: to beat you at your own game.

John,
you always submit your screen shots via ftp and not with the
"Upload new screenshot"-link in the long description of the addon.
That's what we are talking about...
... and what I told you before.
So once again:
Do not upload images via ftp - only your add-ons.
1. Upload your ZIP via ftp
2. Wait until we did add your add-on to the catalog
3. Go to the long description (magnifying glass)
4. Upload your screen shot
5. Wait until we add the screen shot to your add-on

All of this is interesting. But something is missing:a 8k or 16k Normal Map of the Moon.I am sure that we have enough data to create one.Even now a probe named Kaguya is inspecting the Moons with advanced color cameras!A 4k Normal Map don??t show the elevations and basins of the Moon very accurately...

If I'm not mistaken, John has also been revising the normal maps for
the Moon too.
Have a little patience there my friend.

A piece of advice: you can introduce resolution optimization of tiles near poles, which will reduce storage space and memory usage, while improving rendering. This requires only resize tiles tx_*_0.png and tx_*_15.png to 128x512, tiles tx_*_1.png and tx_*_14.png to 256x512 in Level 4 and tiles tx_*_0.png and tx_*_7.png to 256x512 in Level 3.
With best regards, Robert

This is very weird.Moon should be one the most known objects in the solar system, but only have altimetric data with size sligthly larger than 4k!?I can??t undestand why is this...
Is Kaguya or the NASA lunar probe to be launched in 2008 going to change this cenario?
john Van Vliet wrote:" something is missing:a 8k or 16k Normal Map of the Moon.I am sure that we have enough data to create one"

no there is not the best data that i have found is
ftp://ftpflag.wr.usgs.gov/dist/pigpen/m ... po/global/ i started with rosiek_lunarDEM_simp.cub
it is 5761x2881 px ( for the poles only the rest is at about 512x256 px )
also the 4k map was very heavily image enhanced and digitally restored to bring the rest of the moon up to 4096x2048
but this left some artifacts ( see image below the diagonal chis cross tic-tac-toe pattern )
