Are there any complete texture packs?

Post #1by Spanky Deluxe » 20.10.2007, 19:27

Every time I come to play with Celestia and start looking for higher resolution textures etc I always get frustrated. I really wish there were a few complete texture packs that had high resolution models / maps / textures for loads of things in one package.

E.g. a texture pack with high res textures of all the planets, moons and asteroids in the solar system in one package that could go in the addons folder. Another pack maybe with all current extrasolar planets etc. I realise these would be big files but it would make life a whole lot easier for new users.

While most of the users on the forums will probably be able to say in an instant which textures etc are the best, its very confusing for new users. I've been dabbling in space simulation stuff since the early days of ssystem and the lack of easy packs of everything the most users would want or need has always been frustrating.

Several people have attempted to create such packages, but all have given up after a while.

Some official hires textures for some of the moons are available for download from SourceForge, but the selection is by no means complete.

The major problem is finding and/or creating accurate textures. There are plenty of textures which aren't quite right.

The second problem is the size. What's resonably hires for one person is impossibly gigantic for another -- whether because the long download time is unacceptable or because the graphics card doesn't have enough memory.

size of the download is a big problem and some people , there hardware , cant use a 32 or 64k vt -not enough ram . Or run at the same time a very large texture + normalmap+ a specular map + a cloud map .All ,almost all new machines except for laptops wont into the hardware problem . but my texture directory and i use compressed .png images is 7.1 Gigs( all .tar.bz2-ed it is 5.6 gig) .Can and would want to dl all that data at one time , maby if you are dl'ing from your dorm room with an all fiber 1gig connection or maybe even on a 6 or 8 meg cable ( very costly many $$$) but i would not on my lower caust ~ 4 meg line and if you have a 100k to 7/800k dsl - no way and don't even try on a 56k line

Although it is by NO means complete, you can find Dr. Schrempp's
and Runar's spectacular - and as accurate as possible - textures on
http://www.celestialmatters.org/.

Great stuff for the "Accuracy in Space" enthusiasts. Of course, most
of these already show up in Celestia - as the Good Doctor is a major
contributor to what we see in Celestia. The site is still worth a look
though.

Just FYI.

Thanks, Bob
