Anyone know where a good Uranus texture can be had?

Been looking all over the place, but I'm afraid that my textural skills aren't
that good, and I haven't found anything better than the 1k version that comes with Celestia.

Anyone else have a realistic 2k (or better) texture I can use?

BTW, I'm on a brand new 3GB RAM machine with an NVIDIA graphics card
capable of displaying 8k textures. Big Smile from me now.

I honestly doubt there are any good, high quality, large maps of Uranus. As you surely know, it's rather monotonous. Recently there seems to be a tad bit of cloud formation here and there, but even a 512 x 256 map can show these rather well. Any larger a map and the resolution wouldn't increase, unless you would want to add fictional features to the clouds (make them more complex, etc).

Appreciate the information, but you're talking to a guy who ran Celestia on
an old 1994 Intel pc for about five years.

Now, I have a top-of-the-line HP with NVIDIA graphics adapter capable of
displaying 8k textures. Also, 3GB RAM, 800GB hard disk space, and I'm
just DYING (pun intended) to see what I missed all those years.

At any rate, I appreciate the information.

Then look out for my pulsars and magnetic fields, available on the forum. Just do a search and have fun !

Already GOT them Martin...

Fabulous work by the way. These are truly magnificent on my new machine.

Thanks VERY much for the work. Truly appreciated by us Brain-Dead types.

Indeed, thank-you for creating the add-on.

Where would I find the pulsar addons?

I've tried searching and came up empty.

Cham, have you given any thought to uploading your pulsars addon to the motherlode?

Well yes, maybe I should think about doing it. Sorry. Actually, I have several addons that I should (?) upload to the Motherlode. My only concern is the amount of "crap" we can find there. To me, the Motherlode is losing some interest. I'm not even sure my own stuff is contributing to that crap.

Let me just mention -- although we have not yet worked out a concise policy for possible uploads-- that at CM we got practically unlimited storage capabilities, since we are also hosted on the IBIBLIO server...

In any case, only peer reviewed textures will ever be stored at CM. This applies also to our own. So whatever will be stored there, the general policy will be entirely opposite to the ML! This is for sure ;-)

Does this mean what I THINK it means? i.e. - That some more of the
REALISTIC add-ons will be available? If so, I'm waiting with bated breath.
(Or, I'm coughing my head off 'cause I've smoked for forty years!)
Hee, hee again.

Bob,

honestly, we are not sure yet what we will make out of this great opportunity in detail. Yet it is a fact that
  • we won this large amount of free and reliable storage with our CM project application @Ibiblio.
  • we shall require that all uploads to CM will have to undergo a peer reviewing procedure. This may admittedly be a slowing down factor. But perhaps it's a fair price to pay, for quality...

We do not plan a vast archive of add-ons. But some special eye-candy might well have a good chance...We shall see.

Cheers,
Fridger

Well, as you probably know by now, good doctor, I really like your
realistic textures. They allow a simpleton like myself to see what the
universe is all about by viewing the real (or as close to it as you can get)
stuff.

Vast would be nice, but quality is much appreciated here.

Fridger;

I don't know if this is planned, but I think it would be awesome if Celestia had build in and automatic download and install from Motherload. I imagine it would work the same that google earth works. Because you are trying to keep only legit images on the site anyway, I think it would work.

Please note that CelestialMatters has NOTHING, really nothing to do with the Motherlode! The two services just happen to be located on the same Ibiblio server.

Certainly NOT ! This would be TERRIBLE for Celestia's credibility !

The Motherlode is just a pile of addons from anywhere and from anywho. In my view, the Motherlode is a mess.

Ok, so you don't use Motherload, fine. But you never answer the other part of the question, weather or not there should be an official site to download the real texture through Celestia, instead of having to go outside the program to placed like motherload, and have people download inaccurate textures.

MKruer, the idea is not new (you can dig the forum) but it need lot of work to build such system, and lot of work to build the textures. So perhaps someday we will have such update system, but it won't be tomorrow...

Well, since no one has replied to my original question, I'm going to
attempt it myself I guess.

Are you folks aware that Uranus is now an exciting planet to visit?

Keck, Hubble and other telescopes have displayed some really
beautiful new true color images (as well as infrared) which show that
Uranus has clouds, dark spots and some real beauty as it gets more
and more excited about being closer to the Sun.

Thanks, Brain-Dead
