New SOL textures (Big images)

Hey guys. I'm currently the leader of a amature solar system documentary project that tells about the solar system. I'll be giving my SOL textures to the Celestia community when it's finished. But until then I'd like to host a WIP here if that's alright! Mainly doing this to have some good feedback and crits/suggestions before I call it final. Let me know what you think of it so far!

Thanks,

Hmm, not realistic in my opinion since the sun is always sooo bright it appears as a flat bright crisp-edged disc of white, however, so lovely I'm sure it'll be a winner with the Celestians ;). I'd say that that's how a cool M dwarf or bright brown dwarf would really look.

So, technical merit: outstanding! Yet, the sixty-four thousand dollar question: was that picture actually generated with Celestia itself???

It was not. However the map is compatible with Celestia. The maps are what ya'll are going to get.

Also: I toned down the shaders from my sun alot, they are at 20%. Below is a banner at 30%

Looks like an EIT 304 image from the SOHO spacecraft...

Definately nice work, but I agree with Spaceman Spiff's point - not realistic. Still, I'd download the texture anyway! 8) :D

That is some excellent work. However i agree that the sun as seen with the simulated naked eye of Celestia would be nothing more than a bright white ball with perhaps some visible sunspots.

This would make an excellent alternate surface of the sun as seen in x-ray light.

It could also make a very good brown dwarf.

Not realistic? What is realistic?

If you look directly at the moon, you will see less stars, because your eyes adopt to the brightness of the moon. Not without reason there is always the advice to watch the stars first, and then the moon, because your eyes have to recover from the moons brightness.

So, if celestia simulates a human eye having an aperture and sesitivity for watching stars, the moon should be a white 255/255/255 disk, too. But it isn't, since the moons brightness is reduced by celestia to match to the brightness of the stars.
If this is allowed for the moon, why shouldn't it be allowed for the sun?

Regards, Pirx

Oh WOW!! Ok i agree with everyone else thats its not a realistic image of the sun in visable light, but thats exactly what a red dwarf would look like!!! Finally a realistic red dwarf texture, yey!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D I am so downloading this texture, please make available soon!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't hold your breath on this texture. I was in contact with this guy and he was going to send me a copy of it. But he ended up just blowing the whole thing off. Its a nice texture but I am not sure how well it would have worked in Celestia in the first place.

I just spoke with the original poster today, and he informed me that he is still working on it, but his system is dead and he's been forced to wait until he can acquire the funds to repair/replace the parts he needs before he goes back to working on it.

Don't give up hope :)

Well that doesn't explain why he blew me off months ago when the texture was finished. He said he was going to give me a slightly higher res copy but that never happened. Listen the guy is very young and no doubt is out living the high life. I look at his original post as nothing more than a tease. I was in communication with the guy on and off for a while through a chat client. I asked him one day what was up and he just blew me off, he just dropped the conversation. The next time we spoke, it was a few days later he couldn't even remember who I was. So anything he says isn't worth anyone getting there hopes up.

Well, I can't say anything about that, Don. Edwards, but I just received a .rar file from the guy containing the texture in a 7K jpeg. He was going to send me the 24K psd as well, but it would have made my computer crash and burn.

I see Don, here is a bit upset with me. I understand why too. Was a rather hectic time for me, work and whatnot. However this -is- still in the works and if you really would like a copy, feel free to IM me. I've no problem with sharing it. I can downsize it as well if you need.

Please do remember that while the map is pretty well completed, it's not perfect. Alot of what you saw up there is done in post (glow, flares, etc) However with my limited understanding of how Celestia works, I do know you can recreate alot of that, if not all.
