Almost not final:
I change the ice spot to offcenter, and made Ceres more maroon:

But now the ice spot seems too large.

Look to my try and error tutorial:
Change the asteroid.jpg to 512X256.Made the same with the mars.jpg texture. The texture triton.jpg was already with 512X256.
Colored Mars polar caps in orange
Mixed asteroid.jpg,triton.jpg and mars.jpg in one single texture.
Use the brush to create the ice spot,in circular moviments.
Use the surface defocuser to mostly erases the cues of the mixed textures.
Remove the saturation
Adjust the color to marroon,by increase the sliders towards red and yellow.
The result is far from perfect, but I did it with the Adobe Photoshop CS2

If someone with better artistic talents wants to try,I would be pleased...

Daniel,

I am impressed! Soon or later you will become our main texture creator. I am not joking, really. A number of Celestian's have started exactly like this.

Reduced the ice spot and voila:

But the dark brown areas dissapeared...
But not doing the defocusing stage, the result is this:

Which one do you prefer?

Very, very credible! Just some questions:

1) the resolution, is that willingly low or what? 512x256 seem just for Celestia distribution;

2) For what concern the ice spots, could you try to blend a cloud map of Earth?

But based in recent Hubble images,I think there is only one ice spot.Or not?
About the resolution is because I couldn??t find the 1k triton.jpg (only the 512x256 base texture),but I will try with the 2k and then reduce to 1k...

My objective was to BLUR the "craters"(the resolution of Hubble images was not enough to reveal craters,so all are fictious) and anyway, the picture of Hubble is still in lores.
I try to mixed the earthclouds.png, but it was no use.
Look to my 1k textures.
Not defocused:

Defocused:

I prefer the latter...

Good! Well, I prefer that not defocused for a unique reason. First, it's true that the real image of Ceres is blurred, but when one has the default approach to the object in Celestia, to be found at distance much more close with respect of Hubble's one; so this discrepancy sound a lot more artificious than the other.

as t00fri put it I started small then went BIG (64k) keep up the work and who knows !

John, for curiosity (yes, I'm somewhat out of topic): what machine should have to be a human for manage a 64k texture or even more a 128k? With 8k I obtain in GIMP a 570Mb of RAM value (premit that in Celestia I can't see over 2k with my graphic card). Bye,
Fenerit.

i use nip/vips
to tile the map and work on a 4k x4k tile in gimp 2.2.15 .Then recombine it into the finished map

Thank you John for reply. This is a very interesting program.

What do you mean, rejected? Has anybody told you this?
Remember that Ulrich is the only active admin at this time. He might be busy with other things, so it can take time.

Also, i doubt you are the only one with an upload in waiting.

BTW, danielj, congratulations (and thank you) on your very decent effort! I hope you continue working on Celestia...

EDIT:
I created your Motherlode Creators folder and moved your upload there. It is now public, and your download directory is this:
http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/creators/danielj/
... It won??t get listed in the catalog until Ulrich has time, though.
