Latest high-res Jupiter Map

Hi folks:

I'm interested in examining the latest high-resolution texture map of Jupiter which contains the little spot ... if one is available. Today in the news, the spot has turned from white to red. I also noticed that the Jupiter cloud bands in the hubble photo were deeply textured with bold contrast between one band and another (about 30% deeper contrast that Fridger's great Jupiter map).

Is there a hubble site or NASA site or ESA site or JPL site, etc. that offers planetary texture maps? Does anyone have the latest Jupiter map?

Frank

Hi, Frank,
Which map are you talking about?
The only hi-res ones I am aware of are those built from material from the Ciclops site.
They can be huge.
I have made my own 8k one, with cloud map, normalmap and specular map.
The full add-on weights some 200 MB.
Here is how it looks like:

Boux,

can you share it ?

I would share it ... but 200 MB :?

I don't bother about the 200 MB. I can download it.

What about a good 4k pack? If I recall the original data is less than 8k so a nice 4 k could be ok, or not?

Boux:

Hubble took this picture of the Great Red spot and the little spot in April/06.

The detail of Jupiter is obviously quite crisp. I did not know if anyone had knowledge of a new Jupiter map containing this crisp an image and also showing the little spot.

Your Jupiter map is great but 200 MB is also way too big for my use in the Activities. Anyone have a 4K Jupiter in png or dds format?

Boux,I really like your texture, but I can??t see much difference from the 4k texture.Perhaps,if you zoom in,would be easier to tell the difference.
But I have a important question:is this level of detail artificial? Is there a raw texture of Jupiter bigger than 8k and you reduce to use in Celestia or the biggest texture available is smaller than 8k and you EXTRAPOLATE to 8192X4096?If the correct is the later, the result will be the same as a 128k entire Earth VT texture...

The original Ciclops map is 4k.
Now, don't look at the map as your usual surface texture map.
It is all about clouds and fuzzy structures with a lot of internal similarities.
The surface map is more like a cloud map than anything else.
You said similarities? ... then you almost said fractal map.
You can repeat structures for any final resolution of the map.
There are several techniques available to achieve this.
Fist, resizing with the regular Photoshop tools.
Rule of thumb: NEVER resize in one pass. Resize by 1 to 5% increments until you reach the targetted size and rework and include sub-structures in-between.
Second, use a true fractal generator plugin like this one:
http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=2
Much better.
Caveat: Genuine Fractal will not add any detail to the resized map (this work has to be done before resizing with the usual tools) but will enhance edges, remove jaggies and pixellation. Can be done in several passes.
This is the perfect plugin for "fuzzy" texture reworking such as cloud maps, gaz giants maps, nebulae, pick your choice.
Yes, zooming in makes the difference obvious. You can get much closer to Jupiter before seeing any pixellation artifacts.

Hi Frank,
I will make a 4k map for you, with the baby red spot included.
Just be patient, until next week-end. Need to find a time slot.

Boux:

:D :D That is GREAT! We will all appreciate it. It will become the first "new" Jupiter map to be made available on the internet. You may find lots of folks around the world seeking it out. Certainly ... NASA and ESA will have an interest, since they already use Celestia internally.

:D

No, of course, not for Frank only
I was just meaning that the educational aspect is my motivation for doing it.
I hope I will find some place to host it.
My ISP already warned me twice of too much traffic on my ftp.
My intention is to redo completely the texture.
I have got all the separated CMYB component layers available and have some ideas about tweaking them further before recombining. I work on components, not RGB, it is more flexible and powerful.
I could also make 2k and 1k versions for low-end computers and laptops.
Just give me some time :)

Don't you send your stuff to ML?

Yep, thanks for the suggestion, that would be the best solution.
I have too many projects (including not Celestia-related) living on my ftp.

Well here is my 8k Jupiter. The main difference with mine is that I added Junior to it. Of course this was many months ago so Junior isn't really in the right place right now. I can't even find any recent info on it as to what it looks like anymore. Here are 2 shots, click the thumbs for the full size picture.

I did the resizing of the texture a little differently than most do. I chose to increase the resolution of the default image until it reached the 8192x4096 of an 8k texture. This doesn't add any detail as many wil point out. But it does let you get much closer to Jupiter before getting a pixelated surface texture. So it does have its advantages in certain cases. If anyone wants thsi texture I can upload it. I am still playing with a matching normalmap and cloudmap, just for fun of course. If I like the results I will post them.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it

Thanks for your understanding.

Don,

I'm interested in your 8k textures, in DDS format. Please, upload ! :-)
