venus 32k/64k
I know the true color of Venus, GLOBALLY ! I don't need some extremelly accurate probes or powerfull software to tell me what is the real color of Venus :
It is globally PINK !
If you want, I can post a true life color picture of the *hot* Venus here. The only problem, she's riding a motorcycle, so some parts are hidden.

Hey hey Cham,
could it be that I happen to know Ms. Venus?? Be warned SEX is strictly forbidden in this forum. It may cause light deflections of the worst kind and other unpredicable phenomena!!
H?¶, h?¶...
Prost!

Hi all,
I thought I'll have a fresh look at the very important issue of the surface colors of Venus. After extensively searching for further solid information in the net, I found a respective Website of the
Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum!
That seems like a decent address...
It includes an account of Venus research that I can thoroughly recommend. The descriptions are short but quite concise.
URL:
http://www.nasm.si.edu/ceps/etp/venus/global.html
Let me display here the two Venera 13 color photos that are clearly explained and most importantly: clearly referenced!. They are credited to
USSR Academy of Sciences/Brown University
As I emphasized previously, it cannot be that the only material of the Venera missions is found in the archives of some US "space artists" .
One of the two pictures I find particularly striking and relevant for Celestia. Just be patient...
The first one shows the color as seen on the surface of Venus.
As an independent confirmation of these Venera 13 colors, let me add an image processed by and thus credited to Don Mitchel:
Next, let me copy some respective explanations from the Smithsonian Venus Webpage:
The surface of Venus is dry and hot--475 ?°C (900 ?°F) day and night throughout the year-- and the atmospheric pressure is 90 times that of Earth's. Few probes have entered this harsh environment, and none has survived long. Only four, all Soviet Venera spacecraft, have returned images from the surface.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
The rocks on Venus are a dull gray, but sunlight filtered by the thick atmosphere gives them a yellow tint. (see images above!) This Venera 13 color photo shows plates of rock thought to be basalt, with dark soil between some of them.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Now comes the most interesting part: The second image has the sky color subtracted, as it would be appropriate for a base texture in Celestia! Note that the sky spectrum has been extensively and independently recorded by the Venera missions.
Here is the resulting image:
++++++++++++++++++++++
Note: the color-gauging bar and the very natural colors associated with visible parts of the spacecraft and the color bar!! The gray rocks look pretty much like basalt don't they?
++++++++++++++++++++++
It clearly and convincingly shows that the rocks are indeed dull gray!
After spending quite some time with digging for REALLY reliable existing information, I am now quite content with what I found. So I think this could form a decent basis for a Venus coloration within Celestia. The atmospheric light must of course then be generated by Chris' Mie atmosphere with parameters adapted to the measured spectrum!

You can always achieve it via appropriate (colored, semi-transparent) layers, of course. Just like BMNG (Earth). also there, the colors are given for atmospheric effects subtracted.

So at the end (?) my already shown, old 4kVenus image (here at 800x400 low res)
looks sufficiently close to your results.

So the yellowish color should come via the diffuse light penetrating through the clouds.Is your texture at the Motherlode??

Happy to know you like it, Fridger.
It's not yet in Motherlode, but I'm going to upload it today.
I'll inform here as soon as it will be available.

Noooooooooooooo, I was not referring to Venus of Milo above! I was referring to the "bike riding one" Cham was alluding to, which actually I have sent him via PM
You should know about those "Sex liberals" in Old Europe...

Hello, I'm happy to inform that finally you can find in Motherlode my new 4K Venus textures, in dds (4 MB), jpg (5.8 MB) and png (12.3 MB).
This is my modest Xmas gift to Celestians, Happy New Year everybody!

Hi Andrea. I really like the quality of the new texture. Unfortunately it seems there's a small issue with it. There's a small black line when it's displayed on the planet.
Examining the texture, it seems that there's a small (1 pixel wide) line on the left side of the texture.
