In case anyone wants to try this here is the origal files's header. The last 4 bytes are the start of data.

Code: Select all

44 44 53 20 54 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 08 00 00 00 10 00 00 00

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

44 58 54 31 c3 8f 73 c2

And here is the fixed header for non mac systems.

Code: Select all

44 44 53 20 7c 00 00 00 07 10 08 00 00 08 00 00 00 10 00 00 00

00 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 20 00 00 04 00 00 00

44 58 54 31 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Hi, all,
I am currently uploading a full 8k pack to my ftp (a pain at 128kbit/s, 2 hours upload here!)
It includes:
- the full 8k png surface map so you will get the highest resolution uncompressed map to play with,
- the cloud map,
- the specular map,
- the normal map,
- the *.ssc file,
...in *.rar compressed format, 100 MB.
The rar format cuts the size from over 200MB to 100MB to spare bandwidth.
When it's done, I will post the link to it for download and test.

OK, upload complete.
Here is a view of the 8k pack in action:

You can download it from the link below. It's >100MB.
I left the surface map in full-res png so that you can tweak it and/or apply your favorite compression scheme (dds, jpeg, png).
I decided to not include the junior red spot.
It looks like it is already there.
Look for it east of the red spot, next cloud band to the South.

Enjoy!

PS plugins written for Windows do not in general work on OS X.

The Squish library for the SquishDDS tool I wrote supposedly uses a superior compression algorithm than the NVIDIA DDS tools, but it has numerous limitations such as no header output (I had to add header output, and I guess I made a mistake somewhere), and no mipmap generation.

Very interesting.
My impressions:the level of detail is amazing, but the packet is too heavy for most computers. In my system(with a 7600 GT),I had to disable galaxies and even so there is some slowdown. The configuration I am using is 800X600,4xAA,8xAF,triple buffering, configuration perfomance, gama and transparency AA off,LOD on,anisotropic optimization on and trilinear optimization off.The frame rate is between 56 fps and 85 fps, most of the time.
I will try later with 1024X768...
A curiosity;when I toggle cloud shadows in the menu, while looking at Jupiter,Celestia and my computer crashes.Do anyone have an idea what cause this?

Wait a sec. You're calling 60(ish) fps slowdown? When you're doing nothing but looking at Jupiter, you do not need any sort of crazy fast framerate like that. 30 fps is would still be more than enough. 15-20 fps would still be satisfactory, imo.

I'm currently running at 1280x1024 and 4xAA and I'm getting 25-40 fps while using this add-on. Actually, switching between different textures makes no difference in my framerate.

The 8k version is too much contrasted, false colors like.

No,I saw MOST OF THE TIME.In some moments, the frame rate drops below 10 fps.And in other times,it actualy freezes. And your computer is really a monster. No surprise you get results as good as this.I think I will stick to the Boux??s 4k texture!

The Boux 8k textuxe seems close to what Hubble's photo looks like. Its cloud details are very crisp. Unfortunately, it is quite heavy in RAM. Boux, do you know if Jupiter would look just like this from that distance, or is it overexposed ... as Cham suggests?

Don, could you post your new 8k texture? Your screenshot also shows great detail, and it would be good to compare it to Boux and Chris's textures.

Not to worry too much there Daniel...

See MY system below, and I'm STILL able to enjoy most of what Celestia
has to offer. I miss out on some of the larger Virtual Textures, but I can
STILL travel the universe to my heart's content. If THIS poor old PC can
handle Celestia, you should NEVER have any problems displaying your
favorite scenes with YOUR PC.

Keep in mind that MY pc has NO graphics card and only 256MB of RAM, but
I STILL enjoy almost all of what Celestia has to offer.

Frank

My guess is that if you were so close to Jupiter, you would be blinded by the light reflected by the white/bluish clouds layers.
The orange/red cyclonic deck would look very contrasted, just as I made it.
I do not know about the rationales behind unargumented comments such as "false colors", "too much contrasted" or "I agee...blah".
As I said in my release post, I made available a full hi-res, uncompressed surface map for people to play with and tweak to their OWN taste.
Instead of whining, please do your homework and come back here with your own (re)work and proposal.
This being said, this map is very close to anything that has been recently released, be it from Hubble or Cassini.
Frank, if you need a 4k map -better than the previous one-, just let me know, I will pm a link for you to download.

Hi guys,
I've recently downloaded Boux's 8kJupiter from the link on this forum. I have made a folder called 8kJupiter,in my
celestia\extras directory and extracted them(using WinRAR) into the new folder that I made.

I then ran Celestia and navigated to Jupiter.I have taken a screenshot to show my problem with the addon here:

I'm not sure waht happened here,I hope somebody can help me with this one.

I had the same issue when I 1st did the exact same thing. (I think) the issue is that there's actually 2 Jupiters there. If you look at the included .ssc file, it's not an alt texture, it's an entire Jupiter definition. You can either use that and make an alt texture, or you can replace the code you have for Jupiter in the solarsys.ssc file with the code in the included .ssc.
