Hi people!

First of all, let me say that this colored moon texture is just excellent! congratulations Jim! :P

I've been reading this post for some days and I decided to try to create a good normal map but, as all you know, there's no real bump/elevation map available :( well, here are the results, at least, the crater shadows are where they're supposed to be :P

Here are 6 screenshots of the moon, with and without the normal map.

Yeah my program didn't do a very good job.
as it tried to make the normal map from the main texture.
wich i thought wouldnt be very good.
just thought id share my failed effort .

Will yours be available praesepe?

I think I prefer the results without the bump map...It just looks more realistic from that distance.

I maybe wrong, I maybe right!

I've tried your bump map also and got an attractive result. It was not a bad idea, but some craters on the main texture have a bright tint (due to material eyecta of the asteroid impacts) and then, it traduces to a high area/land on the bump/normal map when is supposed to be a deep area..so the only way to do so is by editing the texture :O

Sure, I will make it available (I'm getting out of space on http://www.la-guarida.com, I may ask chris if he can provide me an account on shatters :O)

Perhaps I could scale down the effects of the normal map... on the default solarsys.ssc the bumpheight is only 0.7...

Do you not have any control over the height of a normal map in the SSC
Like you do with a bump map ?

IE:

Code: Select all

   BumpHeight 4.0
CPU- Intel Pentium Core 2 Quad ,2.40GHz

RAM- 2Gb 1066MHz DDR2

Motherboard- Gigabyte P35 DQ6

Video Card- Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS + 640Mb

Hard Drives- 2 SATA Raptor 10000rpm 150GB

No, at least I've never heard of it.. the only way to increase/decrease the height effect on the normal map is by using the -scale x.x option on the nvdxt tools :P

Hi all,

there is only one way to scale an (existing) normal map: with an photo editor. If you know how to adjust contrast and gamma for each color channel you can do the job. To scale down a normal map reduce the contrast of the red and green channel by the same value. Use the gamma correction for the blue channel and make this brighter. That's all :-).

Note that the 'no data' value of red and green is 127 and of blue 255 and this colors should be not changed !

Some notes to the blue channel:
This channel is used to decrease partial the brightness of the surface texture to give it a more plastic view. But this channel is not used for the bumpmapping effect. If the surface texture is not complete flat that means you can see the mountens also without bumpmapping then the blue channel is not necessary and can be filled with 255 (white). I prever this for my normal maps. This reduce also the max. colors of a normal map from 24 to 16 bit.

Bye Jens

Jim:

I downloaded the moon texture. It is great to see such a richly textured moon without the stripes in it. However, I just can't get use to a green moon. In some views, the mare are almost emerald green. The photo you used as a guide was taken by the satellite through a green filter. It did not claim to be a true color image and if only a green filter was used, the moon's tint would be unnaturally green.

Could you be kind enough to copy the 8kdds texture in grayscale and put a link to it, or dramatically reduce the green tint? Please .... :?

Thanks

Hi Frank,

Fist let me say that this color Moon texture is not the last but only my first try. The greenish tint was not my aim but it was caused by my old Monitor. Now I have adjusted the color settings of my grafic card and hope that this helps.

Now the good news. I'd worked since a week on real color Moon texture. The colors based now on real data (expect the poles). Here is a shot:

Hi all,

I need your help. I work on the color Moon map version 2 (this time the colors based on real data). I build three 1k test Moon maps. Please test this textures and tell me which texture is the best or what should be improved. I will upload only one version as 8k DDS and 2k JPG file.

Cool!

In my oppinion, "mon_co_1k_a_lowsat.jpg" has the most accurate color, at least as I have seen through the telescope! :P

Keep up the good work jim! ;)

Jens...I love the coloured Moom texture...even if it is a bit green. The areas without the 'Seas' have a nice brownish tint to them. A greyscale version, for me, is not an option. It will look lifeless and flat...like the moon I suppose.

This is a tricky one...Frank...I could do a brownish version...I've saved Jens textuer to tga...so it is possible I could colour it anyway you'd like. If this OK with Jens.

I guess it could be with how you've calibrated your monitor settings...?

Jens:

The low A has just a touch too much reddish. I definitely opt for the lower saturation version. Every color photo I've seen of the moon shows it to be a quite grey moon, with perhaps just a touch of beige or pale brown-gray. The low sat choice comes closest to that.

Please upload that as the 8k moon.

Thanks for the excellent work.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the comments. :D
I've uploaded a 2k JPG Moon map. The colors have been a bit changed. Now I hope this will be the final Version. Please tell me what you think.
