It's the ring of volcanoes that goes right around the Pacific ocean. west coast of america is the eastern side of it, the islands off alaska (Aleutians?) are the north, Japan is the west, and um... something off antarctica is the south?

Sorry marc i could only find a standard bump map.

And thanks Chris for putting up the file and code.

The original ETOPO2 bathymetric elevation data are ready for download in 11k size/16bit(!) grayscale resolution, e.g. as a (big endian) SUN raster file or as ASCII data. What's the problem??

They were also used in Mario's/SpaceGraphics 'Earth One' 24bit bathymetric 5k earth texture.

No Problem!
You just knew where to look, and I didn't.

but thanks for the link

Paul:

You were asking above for a /standard/ bump map. Moreover I could not imagine that someone who is interested in bathymetry is unaware of the ETOPO2 elevation data. So I concluded that you might have encountered /problems/ to work with their SUN raster or ASCII format and were looking for a /standard/ JPEG file of these data instead. My 'What's the problem' was meant as an offer to help in case you wanted to directly work with ETOPO2...

Sorry if i came across harsh there, but i did take your comments as help, anyway.

as for being interested in the bathymetry subject
well err.. i only found out what bathymetry was when i stumbled across the spacegraphics web page for the first time. :?
and the texture was faily easy for me to convert
So i made it my first effort at converting the texture and putting it up here for others to use

Great graphics work such as yours is far from my knowlage
as is space science too.

i just have a big interest in outer space, and very small knowlage of it
So Celestia has been increesing my knowlage slowly
