I'm building some models (satellites, ships, etc. -- mostly fictional), and while I can color the different components, I would prefer to have textures on them. I've learned how to apply textures. My question is this --
Is there any site that's a good source for free textures like solar panels, different types of metal, etc? My feeble attempts at these fall far short of what I'd like to have, and I don't want to just nab something from online that may or may not be available for public consumption.
Any thoughts?

There are LOTS of sites giving access to free textures of all sorts. Really, just make a google search. See for example the web pages below (I used some of the textures there to make my own planets and models) :
