Another way of pointing out the problems with pre-shaded textures is that there are now TWO suns competing in casting shadows and producing illumination!
On the one hand there was the static ficticious sun that with some fixed position was used in suitable 3d shading software to shade the BMNG texture. This was done for BMNG by Reto Stoeckli/NASA, with whom I communicated extensively.
On the other hand, there is the "real" sun in Celestia whose relative position changes with time and so do light and shadows that the Celestia sun produces, based on a superimposed normal map.
Even non-experts should realize that this is far away from an ideal set of textures!
