Texture maps on 3ds models question

Hello all:

New to the forum but work with 3D models all the time.

I wanted to make the Hubble model more real by texturing it with some images. Plating on the side of the craft for example. After I loaded it into Celestria it only used one image over the whole craft. I used two images. I played with it by breaking the model into differnt layers but then some of the surfaces were not textured. Any info or link would be helpful. When I get it done I will submit it at motherlode for all to enjoy.

Don

PS I also have a Mars rover model that I could give if I get this working. The rover and Hubble will be small in size file/image wise.

There probably are two or three effects causing problems for you.

One is that Celestia requires the sizes of surface texture images to be a power of two on a side.
e.g. 512x1024, 256x128, etc.

Another is that Celestia can only use JPEG, PNG or DDS textures.

And third, Celestia cannot map different textures to different locations on a mesh. To apply multiple textures, you'll have to cut the mesh into separate pieces.

Also, when several textures are to be applied to a 3D object, the file names of the surface texture images (materials) have to be specified within the object's 3D file. An external Texture declaration applies the same texture to all of the object's materials.

Brief documentation of Celestia's model format is available at

A short discussion of textures is at

Thanks for the reply.

I checked over my model (separate pieces), textures are power of 2 and all are JPG's. I am going to download one of the Hubbel's on Motherlode and see how it was done. When I get it figured out and it is better than the two already available on Motherlode I will upload it.
