Generic Planet Textures

Post #1by Darkshot » 06.02.2005, 20:57

Hi, I'm looking for some generic planet textures to use in a little addon I'm making, and since I can't make anything myself, I thought I'd see if I can find anything and use it. (with their permission of course) So if anyone knows where I can find something like textures used in a random solar system generator, nothing that is designed off of something real, let me know. I already have some textures that I'm using as temporary ones at the moment, but I have no idea where I originally got them, so I wouldnt be able to release this to the public. Thanks.

Have you heard of Lunarcell? Try a Google search for it and download the program. It allows you to create fictional planetary textures (for rocky planets anyway). Although you need either Paintshop Pro or Photoshop to run it.

Ok, I'll look into it, but I'm more looking for Earthlike worlds, not so much rocklike. But rocklike could help out in some ways as well. Thanks.

PLanet generator is also a good base for random planets

Planetgen needs a lot of tweaking before its planets look realistic- I have been cloning terrain into the outlines generated by the program, and also shifting continents around to suit myself- if you try to simulate plate tectonics you can make some fairly realistic worlds with this program.

These worlds were created with planetgen and a clonebrush...

When I meant rocky planets, I was including earthlike as well, it may be a good idea to combine the results from the planet generating programs to get an unusual effect.

Alright thanks everybody, now i'll look through these links. Thanks for your time :)

That planetgen program is very interesting, but I dont really have the skills to make a semi-real looking planet (at least what i'm looking for) out of that.

Oh and that Wilbur thing I might read how to get that to work in a bit, looks crazy though. :)

Oh wow if I can get this Lunarcell working right it might be just what i am looking for. Thanks. again.

Hello,

I also want to make some planet textures, and used Planetgen until now.

These worlds were created with planetgen and a clonebrush...

Sounds good, but what is a clonebrush?

Thanks,

Hi John,

this is a nice one :D

With this:
Planet -pq -c -a -s 3.1415 -m 1 -w 1024 -h 512 -o testWin.bmp

it gave me a nice planet texture :D

Can I somehow let it generate a few dozen with different colors etc. to choose some? This thing should have an interface, then it would be really great.

Have to take a look at those parameters...

well the code is not mine but i have been thinking about making a gui
as for the colors there are some settings to change this see the manual.txt
also in the code it can be edited and re compiled to use diff. colors
