Trying to add high detail Cyprus

I tried to add the Cyprus image here http://www.visibleearth.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/viewrecord?7699 by using gimp to erase the ocean and then putting it as a layer on an enlarged tile of the 32k earth virtual texture. But the high detail one doesn't fit over the old one. Could the Visible Earth picture be of a different map projection? I saved my work as a xcf file for gimp so if anyone wants to see it, I can send it.

Yes, the projection of the full Earth map is a different projection. The Cyprus picture is what you see from space, but the full Earth map has a simple cylindrical projection, so that the nearer you get to the poles, the more the map is stretched in the east-west direction. I think you will have to do some image manipulation...

Hi.. I have also done something with that picture and this is my result..

Image

I have make 2 tiles of 2048x2 in level6 (for best zoom-in or to not do some level7 to 8 ) and the main picture fit quite easy over the original VT texture just by resizing it only.. Anyway i do like the look or the result.. If interested, just contact me..

Nice day.. J.P.
