Sorry for the delay in responding back everyone. Please keep in mind that I am on a 56k modem for now and not used to waiting so long for pages to load. After looking over the pictures and the texture again I think something is a miss. I am hoping I didn't adjust the color on the wrong working textures but I might have. It will not be hard to adjust the water color at all because its a separate layer so I could make it pink and it wouldn't effect the other layers. Of course I won't make it pink that was just an example. I will go back in and see what is going on. As I said after looking at the pictures I remember the color being a more blue color than this. You have to keep in mind that while I am working on the textures I am not seeing them in there totality but at a magnification of 300-400%. So things like the color of the whole ocean can get away from me. But as I said its as easy as sliding the Hue control a few notches to the green to bring the color back in line. So bare with me and hopefully I can have a few new pictures up this week end.
BTW,
The pictures will be smaller for the foreseeable future do to me being on a 56k modem. If all goes well I am hoping to be on a DSL line by mid December.
So cross your fingers. Comcast is history. I am tiered of the service interruptions and the cost. They price gouge me and extra $10 a month because I don't use there video cable service. So instead of paying $45 a month I have to pay $55 a month. I am also tiered of the service people treating me like a five year old when I call in to the service center. All in all, the buy out of AT&T Cable and the transition to Comcast has been the worst experience of my internet life.

And we should not forget how different even the same image will appear due to differences in monitor-settings and possibly driver-settings (for example gamma or NVidias "Digital Vibrance" setting).

Don,
Now you know why I always use thumbnails that link to larger images.
Harry,
If you use applications which have specific color needs, like paint programs, then you should calibrate your monitor. The easiest way to do it (assuming you have a DVD drive in your computer) is to use one of the home theater calibration DVDs like "Avia Guide to Home Theater". They should be available from your local video rental outlet or from Amazon. Color calibrations tend to drift as components age, so they have to be redone periodically.

Hey everyone,
Well I wanted to post these pictures when I made the earlier screenshot post but because of my connection going up down at the time I held off. So I decided to post these to show what the texture would look like closer up than the earlier shots. I haven't adjusted the coloring as of yet but I am going to make the modifications tomorrow.
You will see that in these pictures the water really isn't that purple at all. It's all a matter of degrees. But as everyone feels that it need the nudge to the green, as I do at this point it will happen. When you put the textures side by side the way I did the color changes seem very dramatic. But when viewed from closer perspective things take on a whole different view. So here are the shots that were to go along with the above pictures but at a reduced size of course.
Now here are two more shots. One is of the new northern ice fields around Greenland and Canada and the other is a demo of what the Antarctic looks like in the new texture at this time. Please don't mind the glitches in the bumpmaping in south polar areas as I hope to get that cleaned up as well.
Well the next pictures should consist of the color corrected oceans.
Please give some input on what you thing the Antarctic looks like. Does everyone like the color difference of Antarctic or should it just go all white.
Let me know what you think.

This looks fantastic Don.
Im not sure what is realistic for antartica, but the difference between the sea ice and the land mass looks really good. Have you thought of using a specular map to highlight antartic landmass?

The cloud texture is my own creation that I have been teasing everyone with for some months now. I am hoping to have it ready to along with the release of the new 16k texture and the part of the 32k virtual texture. So just stay tuned.
BTW the cloud texture is known as the Northern Summer clouds. I have another shot of it on Earth Central in the Celestia Hub http://63.224.48.65/~impulse/Hub/Celestia_Hub.html

Well hopefully these are going to be the last of the color testing pictures I post. I have adjusted the water texture layer to -5 in the HUE value. This took most of the purple coloring away. So the following pictures are of the new texture in various forms of rendering under Celestia.
First we have the texture raw without clouds and all effects turned off to show what the coloring looks like.
With cloud layer only.
With Specmap enabled.
Sepcmap enabled with clouds.
With specmap and haze enabled.
With spec, haze, and clouds.
Now one thing that allot of you may have noticed is what the cloud layer is doing and why I haven't released it as of yet. It has a haze layer of its own and I need to remove some if not all of it before the cloud texture is ready. The northern winter cloudmap doesn't have this problem. When I made this cloud map the cloud textures background wasn't true black as a result the it created haze layer that made it into the cloudmap. It will be easy to fix I just haven't taken the time to fix it due to the work on the 32k texture.
So what I need from everyone is what they think of the new coloring and is it blue enough. As can be seen in the image without clouds but with my new setting for the haze layer the water does get quite a bit bluer. This of course is a matter of taste. But if everyone still thinks the original coloring of my old 16k texture is best than I can change over to that instead. But it will cause even more of a delay on the textures. If all goes well I am hoping for a Thanksgiving release date for the 16k version but I can't make any promises on that. I do have someone in line to do the conversion work on the 32k texture but if anyone else would like to give it try when its ready please drop me a PM. Well I think that covers everything for now.

Well after looking at the final picture, the water does look a little too grey-ish
But if you look to the top right of the earth there is a section where the water looks just right.
if you could get that colour blue all over, (after adding all layers)
Thats the colour i think would look better. IMO

Ok,
I feel this is the final color adjustment. So have a look at this.
On the left is my prvious post and on right is the new look.
This is a series of pictures showing the texture in various forms of rendering.
And finaly some close-ups from an orbital point of view.
First what the texture looks like without effects
With spec and haze enabled.
Finaly spec, haze, and clouds.
The new coloring seems to work well at a distance as well as up close. Hope everyone likes this as its as close to the older 16k I dare take this texture. So as always let me know what you think.

Ahhh! Beauty
I see what you meen about the cloud layer adding an extra haze affect though.
I seems to wash the colour right back out again.

After seeing quite a few images of Earth, from film mainly shot from the various Shuttle missions in a recent blitz of TV programmes shown here in the UK to celebrate 'Space Week'.
And also by paying a visit to NASA's 'Earth From Space' site; http://earth.jsc.nasa.gov/sseop/efs/
I have found they have influenced me into liking a slightly more light-blue ocean colour for Earth.
Your latest screenshots get a big 'thumbs-up' from me, if this is the colour you are going to go for!
BTW, how does your latest colouration for the new texture compare with your previous 16k realistic-Earth texture? Are the new oceans a lighter blue?
regards

Don is the master. I refuse to use any other texture. The coloring on all the others look too warm. I have yet to see a more accurate representation. Screw what anyone says about your 16k coloration. I think its dead on. I hope it will look the same on the 32k versions. Keep up the good work, and I can't wait for the 32k versions. Actually, take your time...I can wait for good results.

Chef Boyardee,
The colors you see above are from the 32k texture. I downsize it so I can take screenshots in Celestia. It looses some detail in the process but it keeps an accurate color representation of what to expect. Now that the coloring issues I think are out of the way I will be finishing up the Western Hemisphere and starting the work on the Eastern half. The minute the texture halves are finished the 16k texture will be assembled and made available for everyone. The Virtual 32k texture will then be cut into manageable pieces and zipped up for processing by another texture artist who has more experience in creating these beasts. It will then be up to how fast that artist can crunch the mass of the thing till it gets released. I am hoping if all goes well it will be ready for a Christmas present for everyone. Cross your fingers, toes and anything you care too.

Well someone a while back asked for a comparison between the new 16-32k and the older 16k I released early in the summer. So here is where things stand now.
The top image is my cover shot for the Earth Hub webpage.
The second is what will be replacing it. A shot of the new Earth texture at 16k with the now nearly finished Northern Summer cloud texture.
As can be seen in the second shot The water coloring is better than the last texture. Thanks to input from everybody. Also you can see that the haze that plagued my earlier Northern Summer clouds is gone. I just need to make a few more tweaks and it should be ready to go. I am sorry to say that the expected Thanksgiving release of the 16k texture has to be postponed. Work has picked up and I haven't had the time to work on the big beast but I have had the opportunity to work on a few other texture to get than on there way. I am still hoping for a release of both the 32k and the 16k before Christmas time. as always all comments are welcome.

Attention Everyone!
I hate to drop a bomb on everybody but all projected release dates are officially rescinded. The texture is intact so don't go and worry that the data was lost.
But the fact that this texture is really kicking my butt so it is making me at this point want to put all release dates on hold. Every time I think I am getting close to finishing the western half I find things I missed and I have to then take care of it. You have to keep in mind I am working on this thing at a magnification of 500% so I can never really see it as a whole as I work on it. I have also had to make certain choices in its creation that might not sit well with the more demanding users of Celestia. So as of now I going to take the stance the computer gaming industry takes on its releases. That is, it will be done when it’s done and not any sooner than that. I really can't give any real date for release at this time any longer. My hopes for a Christmas release are definitely out he door at this point. I have about 80 hours of work in this texture and no end in site. I now see why the other texture artists around the web charge big money for there work. It’s not easy to work on something this big and we are only talking about a 16k x 16k texture segment at this point. I am guessing the western half is going to take at least another 8 hours of work spread over several days. Than I can finally start the Eastern half of the texture. It by far is going to take the longest. I am guessing over 100 hours at my present pace. There is allot more coastline for me to repair in this half. Not to mention that I have discovered a problem with the northern Ice caps in both halves that has to be addressed as well. So bare with me on this. I can promise that the texture is worth the wait. But I can only handle to work on it a few hours at a time. It really kills the eyes to stare this thing for to long.
Thanks for your time and support and here is hoping that this is done before spring!

Don just remember....
Don't turn your projects and hobbies into a chore, just to please us.
Work on this at your own pace to suit yourself.
Pesonally I'd rather wait for this texture to be finished in your own time
with lots of care taken with it.
Than have you rush it and not be happy with it.
I can tell you take good pride in your work
So it will be finished when its finished.
