Ultra fast DDS viewer

Hi all Windows user,

The latest Version of IrfanView (v3.85) with installed Formats-plugin can now open DDS files (up to 8k maps on my system). With the 'Batch Conversion' command it's possible to convert very fast and easy the levels of a DDS virtual texture to JPG, PNG or another format. But IrfanView dosn't support an alpha channel and can't save to DDS format.

Hi John,

nice software too especially for our Mac and Linux user. But why have you not reported this? There was so many calls for a DDS-viewer in this forum.

Ultra fast DDS viewer

Post #5by Bob Hegwood » 21.10.2003, 06:29

Hi all...

Would just like to verify that Irfanview does indeed read and convert DDS files as of the latest release (provided also that you have downloaded all of the plugins.)

My Windows XP machine can now view DDS files after their conversion to PNG files. Simply open the DDS file, then use the "Save as" function to specify that you wish to save the image in the PNG format. Although the Alpha channel may not be supported, you CAN specify transparency as one of the save as PNG file format options.

Hope this helps..

Take care, Bob

Hi well i just might have to shoot myself for saying this .
Microsoft's DXT 9b sdk is dooing a VERY,VERY FAST convertion 8k.png to 8888 dxt . and i only have to right click the .png image form within explorer and it converts it .
and it also gives a thumbnail viewer that works

P.S. and so fare no bugs --and who would have thought that
MS would get something right for once .
