anywhere a big Download Archive with BIG Textures?

Post #1by videoman » 04.08.2003, 10:05

From time to time i visit the forum hoping to find another big texture i haven't.
Last time i found The Celestia Page of John. With happines i startet several downloads of big files my 2-channel isdn connection but they were interrupted several times and my download manager couldn't catch the links to continue. And John isn't online with his site the whole day. He has so many wonderful big Textures i wanted to download.

Is there a link-list of stable download sites/mirrors of such big textures anywhere?
Or can anyone post a few links? Sure there are a lot of people and homepages of celestia a haven't seen yet.

Well my new big 16k texture is hosted right here at shatters.net. I don't think anyone has problems downloading.
Might I also recommend trying another download manager if your present one can't resume the downloads without corrupting the files. That is not the sign of a very good download manager as far as I am concerned. I use Download Accelerator and it hardly ever has problems with files from John's site. It also will make multiple connections to help speed up your downloads. Although that doesn't seem to work on John's server to often. I think he has it set for a single connection per ip address. But if the download doesn't finish I have always been able to resume it th next time he goes online.

I might answer a PM or a post if its relevant to something.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it

Thanks for your understanding.

The page i tried to download was: http://68.42.66.157/JohnsCelestiaPage/

My download manager (Get Right 4.5)can't catch the download-links of his website it only downloads with Internet Explorer window and when the download is interrupted the whole connection to his site is gone ( i hit the refresh button but Internet Explorer gives an error that this site cannot be displayed, but my connection to the rest of the world is ok)

Get Right is working fine with me but i will try other ones.

The biggest Textures i download are 16K of Earth and Mars and a few 2k and 4K. All standard textures are too small for me.

Unfortunatley you wont find all the best and biggest textures all in one place, lined up nice.
(but John's Site is very close)

Different people make textures all the time.
So searching through the forums is the best bet.
Or just ask here for exactly what you are after, and somone will point you the way.

But Don's latest 16k Earth texture, and Praesepe's latest 16k Mars texture, are the latest and best around.

Don has already posted his link.
So here is the link to Praesepes Mars 16k  http://www.shatters.net/~praesepe/files/MarsV3-Shaded-16K.zip

Enjoy

Please do not use download accelerators that make multiple IP connections to shatters.net . . . It seems to really bog down shatters.net for people only using a single connection. I need to figure out how to make Apache limit the number of simultaneous connections.

My working Celestia

Post #7by alan_federman » 21.08.2003, 18:07

Occasionally I am on the road without a computer, so I keep a 'working'
copy of my celestia files on a fast access web site:

http://exp.arc.nasa.gov/downloads/celestia/textures/

There is a separate DDS sub directory for the really big textures (Earth moon and Mars) The regular 'hires' has the png's and jpeg's

We also have a minimal install for PC and Mac at:

http://learn.arc.nasa.gov/exp/ (this is for low and medium res textures only - but shows all the planets and a fuller selection of spacecraft then the
default for the PC install.)
