Hi!
I am pretty new to Celestia and I have to admit that I am very impressed. I have downloaded a few addons and yesterday I also downloaded new textures of Earth.

Well, i made a backup of the original earth texture (and the solarsys-file) and then i replaced the old earth texture with this new. I started Celestia and zoomed to earth. I was shocked when i saw how slow the program was running when i faced the earth.
Why? I have a AMD 2400+, 512ddr-ram and a Geforce 4 Ti 4400. How good computer do YOU have if you can use those 32k-textures?!
Or am I doing something wrong? Using the wrong filetypes or something? Should I convert the file to dds or what? And please, remember that I am a newbie to the world of Celestia.
Excuse me for my bad english...

Problem with textures (newbie-question)
Yes, I think you must use the DDS versions of textures, because the JPG ones have to be decompressed in memory before used by your card. DDS ones are used directly.
8k textures = 8192x4096x4 = 128Mb VRAM

Try using a DDS texture.
As jamarsa said, its much better to use a dds texture when dealing with textures of this size.
Try the 8k texture from here.

but you will have to add the spec map too, to get the sun reflection.
the spec map is also on this page.
