See Mars Get Terraformed!!!

Post #1by Don. Edwards » 28.04.2003, 19:13

Well I said I was going to post some images of the Mars terraforming project. So I decided to put them together as an animated gif. Now it might take a few minutes to download so be patient.

Well here is a not so little movie that looks like your in orbit over the final terraformed Mars texture. You will need the latest DiVX plugin to view it. Its about 23mb in size so give it a few minutes to download. But its worth it.

At present the textures are all 8k. I will be making downsized versions shortly and converting the lot to dds format. I will not however be pluging in the Specmap any longer. I have made changes to the specmap and for some reason when it is pluged into the alpha chanel certain areas will not reflect specular lighting. Of course it works fine when manualy pluged into your .ssc file. I am also going to do a little more work on adding more water to some of the craters and adding that to the specmap as well.

don, very beautiful

BUT I HAVE A QUIESTION: WHY MANY PEOPLE TRY TO MAKE MARS TEXTURES WITH WATER AND GRASS???
IF THEY WANT TO MAKE IT, THEY HAVE TO MAKE AN EARTH WITH ONLY ONE BIG PICE OF LAND, AND A MOON WITH OUT CRATERS AND MANY OTHER THINGS.

I REMEMEBR SOME ONE TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NO POINT IN MAKING SCIENCE FICITION MODELS... A MARS WITH WATER IS NOT SCINCE FICITON?

El Pelado,

Of course anyone can make any object they want for Celestia. Many people enjoy science fiction. However, I think it is important that the people seeing the results of such projects not be mislead into thinking that what they're being shown is fact.

Although terraforming Mars cannot be done today, it is a topic that many scientists have studied. Lilke many projects that seem impossible, it's important to find out what would be needed to do it and why we can't do it yet.

In the case of terraforming, I also think it is important that the results of those studies be used whenever possible when designing something for use in Celestia. If someone wants to make a fanciful design out of their own imagination, that's fine, too, so long as they make it clear that's what they're doing.

ElPelado,
The textures are for a NASA educational site. But of course I plan on releasing them for everyone. As for doing anything to the Earth and Moon. That’s allot more difficult. For the Earth you are talking about moving the continents around and changing mountains and valleys. Same for the Moon. The Mars textures are simply an adaptation of the present textures as what Mars might look like with oceans and vegetation. We already know what the Earth looked like for the most part in the past. There is just no easy way to make those textures. Trust me I have tinkered around trying and the outcome wasn't pretty. Not to say that it can't be done or will not be done. But at this point know one has been able to pull it off. As for the sci-fi aspect I feel there is sci-fi and theoretical. A terraformed Mars is not sci-fi but theoretical. As is placing a solar system around another star as we now know that such things exist. I feel sci-fi is creating Star Wars, Star Trek, and the Dune universe in Celestia. So everyone who are making add-ons keep working on it. Who knows what is really out there anyway.

ok. i want angry beacause of the tearraformed mars textures. i just wanted to ask why to do them, because its not only one man trying to do them, i have already seen many people trying to make a mars with water, so i just wanted to ask.

and about sci-fic, i love the Fundation trilogy, and many times i thought about making it. but its very difficult, many planets, many stars in ALL the galaxy, not just in a cube with 16k ly. so simply, its impossible. an other option is to make a globular cluster, and make all the planets there. but it wont be the same.
andi have also made my sci-fic models. im not against that.

and i say again, your texture is wonderfull andi have downloaded the video too.

anothertyhing, some knows how to use the rasillon cluster generator??
