Does it provide an adequate high-resolution representation of the topography when used without a suface texture map? I'm wondering whether, if it were possible to remove the topography from the surface texture, would the bump map provide sufficient topographic detail? Can anyone comment on this?

Yes, for sure. Here you see as an illustration my 16k normal-map of the Andes region on a uniform (dark orange) texture.

I made many experiments in the past trying to compensate the main texture shading by means of an /inverted/ bump-map in GIMP. It works nicely, but generally one encounters artifacts that seem very hard to avoid with this method. Sorry no time left to go on...perhaps more tomorrow. It's a long story.

Try my Mars Bump map and texture they are 8k, 4k
