planets and moons become white balls...

I got some nice texturemaps from http://www.oera.net/How2/TextureMaps.htm and placed them in the medres folder. I changed the appropriate filesnames in solarsys.ssc and started celestia, only to find earth looked like a dull billiardball... What can be wrong? I use a Nvidia TNT2 Pro card with 32 MB and a pentium 3/700 memory is 128Mb and the maps are 2500 x 1200 jpg.
OK, I am a newbie, but I think I did everything right...

Textures must be a power of 2. ie: their dimensions must be 128,256,512,1024,2048,4096,8192 or 16384 pixels along each side.
