The maps are already available in JPEG and TIFF format, so whose traffic are you trying to cut down?
Nowadays a lot of people have broadband internet connections so downloading big files shouldn't be a problem any more.

If you answer some post, you could read it more attentively. But I can repeat: by activating ZIP compression of pictures. Currently they (TIFFs) are (mostly) uncompressed TIFFs.CAP-Team wrote:The maps are already available in JPEG and TIFF format, so whose traffic are you trying to cut down?
Is the downloading of maximal possible quality of megabytes, regardlessly of possibilities, your hobby?CAP-Team wrote:Nowadays a lot of people have broadband internet connections so downloading big files shouldn't be a problem any more.

Yes I read that correctly. I agree that it would save space, but I don't mind if Steve doesn't compress his maps.RVS wrote:If you answer some post, you could read it more attentively. The amount of megabytes I download is not something that keeps me awake at nightRVS wrote:Is the downloading of maximal possible quality of megabytes, regardlessly of possibilities, your hobby?

Re: Maps of Steve Albers
That might be worth considering as for me the disk space can be a bit of an issue. In IDL where I make my images I can select LZW or "pack bits" compression that I believe should be lossless. Perhaps that would save a modest amount (30-50%) - I'll see if it helps any for my next updates.
And by the way, I've recently updated my maps for Titan and Iapetus. The Iapetus map now incorporates additional hi-res mosaics constructed by Gordan Ugarkovic, including the northern Saturn-shine region, the Voyager mountains, and the terminator area of the outbound portion, all from the September 2007 encounter.
Catch you all later,

Different formats (using Irfan View) yeld:scalbers wrote:That might be worth considering as for me the disk space can be a bit of an issue. Code: Select all
name ext size
-----------------------------------
iapetus jpg 4,065,307
iapetus png 33,637,536
iapetusJPEG tif 11,520,233
iapetusLZW tif 59,487,044
iapetusNONE tif 100,696,290
iapetusPackbits tif 101,398,218
iapetusZIP tif 44,453,016
Ideally you would convert into PNGs (at a compression level 9) all yours TIFFs and get rid of this format.
Re: Maps of Steve Albers
Thought I'd share this "work in progress" version of my Enceladus map. The entire map has been renavigated and 5 images from the August encounter are included to help show the south polar regions at high resolution. Color information has been added from the "Great Southern Lands" mosaic. The map is at http://laps.noaa.gov/albers/sos/sos.html#ENCELADUS. And yes, it works OK now to post this in PNG format.
Here are a few of the items I'm continuing to look at to try and improve the map:
1) adjust the navigation on the "frame 4" image over the south pole from the August encounter as some mismatches are evident
2) adjust image brightnesses to reduce some of the obvious seams
3) extend coverage of the August imagery over Mosul Sulci
4) attempt to reproject some of the other released color mosaics onto a cylindrical projection so I can utilize the color info. This appears to be a non-trivial exercise for some or the mosaics, compared with the "Great Southern Lands".
Hopefully I can post a version with most of these improvements before too long.
