Render Orbital Planes

Hey everyone,
I recently got into using Celestia and think its awesome. I also just got the Celestia source compiled but am a little daunted by the scale of the code (sorta expected that). Anyways, I figured that it shouldn't be too hard to change the orbits from ellipse outlines to semi-transparent filled in ellipses (planes).
So my question is: where would you guys start? is there a particular section of code to look at to facilitate this? any obvious problems that you forsee me running into on such an attempt?
