when i try to download an addone it just comes up a webpage with a load of data, how do i save the add-on

It sounds like some of your browser's file associations are broken.
That is, somehow various filetypes have become associated with being opened by the browser when they should be treated as "unknown" and thus downloaded as files.
With most browsers, you can explicitly download the file that a link points to by clicking on the link with the right-most mouse button. In the popup menu, select "Save target as..." or the equivalent. That way the browser will put the file into the directory you specify instead of being opened in the browser.

what type of file do i save it as, when i do that it saves as a txt file

just save it as "*.*" Any Type or some option like that
