A taste of my first addon - A Classic O'Neill Colony (WIP)

This is a classic O'Neill colony with 2 counter-rotating cylindrical habitats, each having 3 valleys of 20km length and 4km width. Cylinder Diameter is 7.2km with a total length including encaps of aproximately 27km.

The outer shell thickness is approximately 50 to 100 meters (comprising utilities, radiation shielding, and underground transport). A rotation period of 2 minutes gives Earth gravity at the rim.

The 3 mirrors can operate on independent 8-hr offset cycles giving each valley a different timezone (offset by 8 hours), or alternatively on a synchronised cycle giving the same timezone for everyone living in the cylinder. The former would be the most likely arrangement in order that industry can operate round the clock. Seasonal cycles between the habitats would be offset by 6 months to give year round choice of skiing, beach, boating activities, etc... to inhabitants of both habitats. This will also encourage mixing/socialising between the habitats.

Very neat. Looks like a lot of work went into them. One of my favorite things about Celestia is the ability to see what once was static in old pictures reimagined as full motion objects. Can't wait for the finished project.

Very nice !

I want to know if the Classic O'Neill Colonisation is able to travel the space by using energy from sun (or he must be around a planet) ?

As buggs_moran says, I can't wait for the finished addon .

In that case you should go here: http://traitorsclaw.sitesled.com/projec ... olony.html and then go to the videos page.

They could get all their energy requirements from the sun (there's no shortage of that up there), but as for travel,...these things are BIG, so you're not going to go anywhere cheaply or in a hurry. Most likely locations are stable orbits around Earth-moon libration points L4 and L5, or unstable orbits around L1 which would require more station-keeping.
This should answer any questions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_habitat

Excellent. Will you have some kind of documentation with the final addon? The wikipedia article is good. I mean something more specific in regards to your work.

I've done a very rough estimate of the mass of these puppies:

120 thousand million metric tonnes. (120,000,000,000)

Code: Select all

Main Habitat:            56,000,000,000 x 2
Agricultural cylinder:      100,000,000 x 60
Misc spars/structures make up the remaining mass.

EDIT:
I realise I may have grossly over-estiimated the mass. Latest estimate is revised down to: 13,000,000,000 tonnes

Really nice looking O'Neill colonies, Chuft-Captain.
Have you made the landscapes emissive? They certainly look that way.

Thanks, I'm glad you like them. How's your re-design coming along?

At this point, no. But I may yet do so, as you suggested.

Stalled somewhat, I am afraid.
Since you have managed to get your cylinders to rotate independently my own version is looking a bit static.

eburacum,

I hope you don't give up on them.
If my models don't make it into production, it would be a shame not to have at least one version of an O'Neill colony in Celestia.

I've posted another clip on my site showing the view from 'ground level' inside a habitat main cylinder.
Click on the thumbnail to go there:

[/url] For a sense of scale, take note of the little white box at ground-level in the distance (below the word "geocities" in the sub-title) -- that box is a 15 story building!
The slight jerkiness of the motion seems to be a feature of video-capture in Celestia. It seems to be impossible to control the final frame-rate of the captured clip. My captures usually seem to play-back at about double speed.
Anyone else experienced this problem?
