Starting from scratch

A friend of mine and I are in the process of writing a science fiction book. We came across Celestia and I must say, it's amazing. So at any rate, we're hoping to use Celestia as our model, so we can feel the system so to speak. I've tried making additions, only half successful and I was wondering if there is any documentation or hints on had to add a system, stars, planets....etc...

How does one do positioning, I've seen some of the code but what about actual coordinances, XYZ.
