Chris - Celestia web site suggestion

Howdy Chris,

Would it be possible to move all Shatters.net-based Celestia files (exes, add-ons, etc.) to the Celestia Project, "Files" page, on the SourceForge web site? The Celestia web site download page can then simply provide the URL to the SF Celestia Files page.

This would free up some serious bandwidth for the forums, galleries, etc.

I don't think that this would help much . . . The vast majority of traffic to shatters.net comes from people downloading big textures from Fridger's and Don's collections, as well as Rassilon's big add-ons.

Okayyyyy,

Then what about moving these files to SourceForge? They are, after all, part of the Celestia project <smile>?

I don't think it would be appropriate to move them to SourceForge, as their not part of the core project. I'd love to offload the traffic to another site, so if I thought SourceForge would tolerate it, I'd have moved the files already. Finally, I don't think it's possible to link directly to files hosted on SourceForge--you have to go through the mirror selection page before you can get the file.

Howdy Chris,

Good points. I don't know if other projects have "extension" files stored on SF or not, so I can't comment on it being appropriate or not.

As for direct-linking, I don't think that would be necessary anyway. The file lists are easy enough to display and select from. So, as long as there is another page on Celestia's site to describe what the files are, that shouldn't be a problem.

There are some sites that offer large MB and transfers for < $10 a month, but whether or not they would let something like the long list of Celestia add-ons be hosted would be something to be tested/seen. Most do not allow outside linking, so this would become the "Celestia Add-Ons" web site.

Just tryin' to think of a way to make things faster <smile>.
