Problem to solve. Need some good ideas.

As I said in another post, I wish we could use the Gliese catalog of nearby stars in a systematic way, in Celestia, to complete sun's neighborhood (d <= 25 pc).

The problem is the following :

The only mean not to duplicate existing Hipparcos stars (for d<=25pc), is with the help of the HD number. When a star has a HD number which is referenced either in the Hipparcos or in the Gliese catalog, it is easy not to duplicate this star. But some stars don't have any HD number (in both catalogs). And the problem is to avoid duplication of those stars.

It looks like David Nash already has merged the Gliese, Yale and Hipparcos catalogs. His results are publicly available. See http://www.astronexus.com/data/hyg.htm

I think that politely asking for a copy of his larger database, the one that includes the Hipparcos numbers. would be most effective solution.
