Shuttle model
There is a shuttle model available.
Unfortunately its mesh is slightly damaged at the nose section and it's on some sort of launchpad... and it's green!! I don't know if anyone could rework this model for Celestia.

Okay all converted.
I took away the launch pad, and made two versions,
Space Shuttle, with booster rockets and fuel tank. And a Space Shuttle on it own.
Sorry, No ssc files for these, as this is not my field just yet.
The only problem, is that no textures work after being converted to 3ds
Here is the Space Shuttler zip
http://www.bt.homepage.btinternet.co.uk/Files/Space-Shuttle.zip
also I found a nice new version of the International Space Station.
again, no textures but the model is very nice.
here is the new ISS file http://www.bt.homepage.btinternet.co.uk/Files/ISS.zip
Enjoy...

Paul...
Great work on the shuttle model. I have it up there with the Hubble.
"Shuttle" "Sol/Earth/Hubble"
{
Class "spacecraft"
Mesh "NewShuttle.3ds"
Radius 0.020
EllipticalOrbit
{
Period 1.1
SemiMajorAxis 0.15
Eccentricity 0.01
Inclination 93.1
}
Albedo 0.10
}
Not sure if the scale is correct, but it looks great.

you are most welcome, bh
if anyone can modify the code for me so that the shuttle doesn't rotate
and just stays upsidedown (if that is how it should be ?)
could somone make a ssc file for tthe SpaceShuttle with the boster rockets
to make it within the earths atmosphere pointing staight up and in sync with the earths rotation, so it looks like it is taking off. ?

I don't have a modeling program
I have a model viewing program, that converts models types.
I can re-colour (some parts) and remove parts,
but that is pretty much it.
I can remove the doors all together, but it just looks silly

The shuttle model we have from the space island group's site is pretty close (great conversion Paul). But needs some more work.
The model as it stands is too long and narrow. See pics:
It also needs the two manoevering engines adding. Also I am keen to make another version with the cargo bay doors open.
Are these mods possible or do we start again from scratch? Does anyone know of some 3d modelling software I could use to edit the model? I'm running xp. Or perhaps one of you with experience of this would like to give it a try?
We've been waiting a long time for this model and it would be well worth the effort I'm sure.
Model at present
This is more like it
Side view of present model
Note shortened nose and fuselage raised slightly

Having it in orbit around Hubble is what's creating the rotation. The following definition keeps the two together in orbit around the Earth, with the shuttle doors orientated towards Hubble. (I've placed the shuttle nose-down because I liked the look of that, rather than out of any knowledge of the correct orientation during the Hubble repair.) There's a slight residual (and realistic!) to-and-fro motion between Hubble and the shuttle because of their elliptical orbits.
Code: Select all
"Shuttle" "Sol/Earth"
{
Class "spacecraft"
Mesh "Shuttle.3ds"
Radius 0.020
EllipticalOrbit {
Period 0.06903
SemiMajorAxis 6767
Eccentricity 0.0012082
Inclination 28.4675
AscendingNode 51.0102
ArgOfPericenter 27.0378
MeanAnomaly 333.0836
Epoch 2452028.18381755
}
Orientation [-90 0 0 1]
Albedo 0.10
}
Grant
PS: To increase the separation between Hubble and the shuttle, just increase AscendingNode slightly - in the fourth decimal place.

Same problem as with the LEM on another thread - the only place that it'll stay synced is (unrealistically) on the equator. In any sort of inclined orbit it'll lollop around in a huge figure-of-eight centred on the equator.Darkmiss wrote:could somone make a ssc file for tthe SpaceShuttle with the boster rockets to make it within the earths atmosphere pointing staight up and in sync with the earths rotation, so it looks like it is taking off. ?

Oh well, why not?
Here's the shuttle climbing through 5km altitude after some bizarrely improbable launch from the Indian Ocean - if you adjust MeanLongitude and RotationOffset in synch, you can position it anywhere along the equator you like, while maintaining the correct orientation relative to the horizon. You can also ramp the altitude up or down by adding to or subtracting from the SemiMajorAxis - but 45km is the highest the whole assembly goes before the solid-fuel boosters are jettisoned.
I've included a 30-degree "lay-back" - the stack rotates shortly after launch so that the shuttle is tilted slightly beneath the main tank.

Thanks for the link Paul.
I was in a reflective mood doing this, still...
I've shortened the fuselage, but the nose is still too long. The doors could be better but I guess we'll have to wait for Shrox to come up with something. Also on the zip is a new version of Doug Gann's lem model and an ascent stage only model.

Nice work. did you do this with Deap Exploration ?
if so, you learn faster than I.
I also noticed you added the extra thrusters too.

Hi... sorry about this. Disregard my last post.
Here are the latest mods.
I've shortened the nose, raised and widened the fuselage...hope it's OK, these will prob be my last mods to this model.
