Too Slow In Debug Mode

I'm only getting 10fps, which when I add the other stuff I'm doing makes the whole thing unusable. The biggest problem is that Microsoft's compiler turns off inlining in debug mode, but I turned off debugging for render.cpp and octree.cpp and there was no improvement.
Any suggestions? Has anyone had similar problems? I'm running on a P3-600 with a TNT2 card and 256MB of RAM.
