The youtube video kind of looks like some of the earth history shows on the Discovery Channel. I wonder if it was used as the source for that show.

The terrain rendering and ocean wave rendering look very impressive. I'm not sure if they use actual height data to render terrains though. It looks a little exaggerated.

I plugged Earthsim into google and found this page. http://www.earthsim.tv/

Indeed, the rendering of the oceans even if exaggerated is really nice... :o

I'm not sure if they are different. Down at the bottom of the http://www.earthsim.tv/ page is a link to a video on you tube "Earthsim 2" but this is a different video than the one posted above.

The link you provided in your edit looks like only the engine. Earthsim 2 is probably an application that uses the engine. Also, it looks like it is only available on commercial terms whatever they are.

May be so.
Probably they are in early stages of Eathsim 2 production, so only some videos are available for the moment.
We'll wait for future news.

Sorry, but this is a USELESS program. You can??t see anything unless you PAY,and it MIGHT be in pounds.I thought when Earthsim 2 will be ready, they could release some of the Earthsim original program content for free.
I??m in Brazil and pounds are in the currency of 5 to 1.Very expensive, indeed!

My friend, useless implies it has no uses. One could use it to view the Earth. Thus, it isn't useless, lol.

Ah yes, this is the difference between Celestia and other programs. And this is part of what makes Celestia so spectacular.

I tried it and I really did not like it. There are no clouds, The stars are rendered awfully, as is the sun. Perhaps it is worth buying for the functions it offers, as far as it goes down to 3D terrains, but the wider outlook (when you look at the Earth globally) sucks against Celestia

Picking up where these posts left off - Earthsim 2 beta is now available for download (http://download.cnet.com/Earthsim-2/300 ... ag=mncol;2 ). You should check it out - most of the content in the beta is free (apart from close up Earth and ground level Mars). The moon is still a bit patchy and needs some work. It is not really that similar to Celestia's (lacking its enormous encyclopedic depth of images and information), but does provide pretty 3D images, is easy to navigate around and uses real height map data, atmospheric scattering and has procedurally generated terrain past image resolution. According to http://earthsim.blogspot.com, the next release coming shortly will have proper shadows and a fully re-worked Saturn.

[disclosure: I came across this product while doing some research on interactive earth simulators for a UK media company and therefore know the founder Servan - I also have the product as my screensaver]
