About colors, star styles and guides...

To achieve a really good job with the visual of the stars when guides are enabled, one must work with the relation between the intensity of the stars and the intensity of the color tone used on the guides. The problem is the different star styles. A particular tone can be adapted to point stars (pretty low*) but become completely useless for scaled discs (because of the huge difference of intensity between points and scaled discs).

So the perfect display should take in account what star style is used and adapt the intensity on the tone used for guides. In the absolute, a slider between points and scaled discs controlling in the same time the intensity (alpha?) of the guides would do a nice job.

Are shots needed to illustrate that?

It seems, so:

Perhaps a legend?

A: The lines are fine.
B: Using the same lines than A, we can see they are not adapted, much too strong, they become a distraction for the eye, it's hard to concentrate the attention on the stars (or whatever faint object)
C: The lines are fine.

It's why I think the lines of guides should adapt themselves to the star style...

(Note that the above is just a mockup to illustrate the topic)

Good point, and it's simple to realize in the code...

Now, a long time ago, there was an idea about removing the diffuse stars style and use a slider to go from point to the actual scaled or perhaps even a bit more. If this slider is still in project, perhaps the change in the guides could be coupled to the slider function... (IMHO, would be the optimum solution).

Also an old idea was to add an option to saturate a bit more scaled disc because actually the tone are too weak (I'm not saying they should be vivid, but sometimes the difference between classes are not evident at first sight)

Should a feature request be filled at Sourceforge?

Yes, please file a feature request. You can make separate ones for line style for guides and the slider to control star appearance.
