Open clusters, then what ?

About the open clusters, what are we supposed to see in Celestia 1.5.0 ? Currently, enabling them doesn't show anything. There isn't any generic model in their case, as there are several for the galaxies ?

I made several "generic" CMOD clusters some time ago, that we could use as "typical" clusters. See this thread :

http://celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php ... ht=cluster

Unfortunately, they don't dim themselves with distance (a feature I already asked before, for these kind of models).

So, what's up doc ?

?? the problem is not new! Fridger has already done what seems to me an interesting comment in your other thread. I suppose we will have to wait more for some generic rendering for clusters and nebulas...

Right now, I have more than 610 open clusters installed on my system. I've tested my generic CMOD cluster on all of them (turned into nebulae). I didn't noticed any slowdown at all. The model is pretty efficient, since it consist of just "a couple" of dots (few hundreds, actually). So the frame rate hit is really minimal (despite the absence of "effective octree culling mechanism"). The only serious problem with the model, is its lack of dimming with distance.

I've always seen open clusters in DSC catalogs as essentially just giving a location and size of sets for stars that are specified in stc files or stars.dat. The dsc definition is there so that the cluster can be labeled and marked (via a script, or possibly by some built in Celestia feature.)

Then why is there an option to "show" the clusters (and not just the labels), if there's nothing to be shown ? Should that option simply be removed ?

Because whoever added that Mac-only render option didn't realize that they were intended only as labels. The option to "show" them does not exist on Windows.

Ahaa ! Thanks Selden.

Then that option should be removed.

I updated all the MainMenu.nibs. Update from CVS to get the fix.
