Heres my current project...I suppose these are getting a bit off texture related so I suppose I should post this here...

Heres a hubble photo:

And heres my model...

Think ill place more clutter like a few off shoot stars and planets around them...

Well I have a question...Which one of these photos is correct perspective...The one in the previous post or this one?

Same

Both are?

Is it a texture you render in Celestia or is it 3D?
Will this be in Celestia in next release?

Niels

ground based photos (the second one) are upside down and backwards remember. and the hubble photos (first one) are not. but then, who knows how the pictures are rotated afterward, and there's no telling how hubble was rotated when it took its photo. so... you can kind of do whatever you want i guess.

Niels this will be for Celestia as an addon as soon as Im done...probably tomorrow or Tuesday...

That looks great, Rass! Did you actually create a 3D model or is that just a textured quad?

Hey thanks!

Its a 3ds I made in max...Took a sphere and used squeeze and noise...took a whole 5 minutes to produce the mesh...

I wanted to make the surrounding jets of gas but they dont seem to look right as a semi transparent mesh...Would look better if it were possible to use the opaque texture method...or transparency map...Not to mention a way to add in volume fog and other max effects for the nebulae...

I suppose I could use a neb from your engine and add it into the galaxies.dat but nah...

GREAT

Hi Rassilon,

I would rotate it (if I could) as shown in the first image. I recall that is how the Carina is shown to most people in most images. Seen from Earth that is.

Great.

How about placing a star inside?

Chris, will the Visual Studio makerealse be uptodate? I do get one error while compiling in VC 5.0 97.

Wonderful! beautiful! WOW!!!
great job Rassilon... it is so big, you can even pick it out as you sit in M31!!!

i was wondering - would you be able to help me with a texture of Saturn?
got the source photo from http://opposite.stsci.edu/pubinfo/pr/20 ... t/0115.tif

i can email you what i got so far.... size is 253k
it just needs a little tweaking, but i cant get it right. Thanks!

Ive made a saturn that resembles the one pictured there...If you want I can mail it to you or upload it on the server...The latter might be better considering its large...Does your video card support bumpmapping and specturals?

Heres a pic...

yes to both counts on the video card.
and yes, I think I speak for everyone when I say that a better, higher res image of Saturn would be well appreciated!
FYI I worked out the problem with my Saturn image, and have been experimenting with bump mapping the gas giants.....
reducing the saturation of an image to black and white, reduce the contrast a little and then applying a slight Gaussian blur creates the illusion that the cloud tops of Jupiter are at varying heights ( as I believe they are in some of the images I’ve seen...)
of course, you folks have already done something similar, I suppose.
always interested in increasing the community's scientific knowledge;
Rassilon, PLEASE put that image up on your site for everyone to get a hold of... not everyone has Photoshop!

Click the link in my signature...Saturn is in there...I didnt do any bumpmaps of Saturn yet...but yes thats correct...I use the same procedure im making all my bumpmaps...Blur smooths the bumps to keep the pixelation down to a minimum :)...White is the highest point on a bumpmap...
