The firmware was design to work ONLY with Windows Vista. You
simply CANNOT download forceware, firmware or any other software
which allows the use of anything but Vista on the PC that I bought.
I CAN install XP, but then I can't use the monitor (HP w2207) wide
screen in anything but basic mode. I also can't use a number of the
other special functions on the machine. i.e.-dvd player/recorder, etc.
Does that make sense?
At any rate, with the last update from Nvidia and Vista (both coming
at the same time) my problems with Vista have been solved. Now, I
just have to get used to the peculiarities of the new system.
I'm just posting my problems here in the off-chance that they may
be of use to someone else who upgrades. There ARE features of
Vista which I like, but I've just had trouble adjusting to the new
setup.
Thanks, Bob

I had problems with full screen display of Celestia in Vista: the refresh rate was really low, 60 Hz I think. Updating drivers did not help. What did help was a little tool called Direct Refresh: [direct link removed, see my next message]

Hm, yes, the thought crossed my mind. I found the announcement here: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t29101.html. Use at your own risk I guess!

Methinks yer asking for TROUBLE when you go messing around with
hardware refresh rates.... Just FYI.
My monitor work beautifully, and there is NO reason to screw around
with it as long as it's fast, very large, and WORKING correctly.
Take care, Brain-Dead

Just for Vista Users FYI...
Just got 8 different updates today, most for security and IE7.
Again, just FYI... Get 'em while they're HOT!

Me too, have updated the IE browser during the web surf. I don't use it but I've get a look: what is? More than a browser seem a system utility or similar; there are menu and options everywhere!
Never at rest.

Celestia OpenGL issues / crashes on exit
I'd like to say that, Celestia has stopped responding after a splash screen upon startup. I can say it is probably due to the OpenGL wrapped around Direct3D and frozen to vanilla version of 1.4. I do know there are two ways to overcome this: One is to provide a legacy OpenGL ICD driver, but disables the Windows Vista Desktop Window Manager when they are loaded in to the process of Celestia. And the other is to provide a Windows Vista OpenGL ICD that work in a way that is compatible with desktop composition. But the trouble is, ATI and NVidia aren't providing Vista-capable (or legacy) OpenGL ICD drivers as of now, and I couldn't even find one.
Can you help me find a solution to this? Thanks.
I forgot to mention there is a bug that crashes Celestia upon exit on the Vista operating system. Is this fixed for Celestia 1.5.0, or the recent version of Celestia (the pre-release version) are currently tested to work on Vista?

Bryan,
All I can tell you is that Celestia 1.5 Pre 4 works fine on my Hp
Pavilion, but with the caveat that I had to get updated drivers and
such from HP and then I had to get updates from Windows which
were apparently specific to HP.
I'm afraid that I can't help with YOUR configuration, because I have
absolutely no information about it.
You can always try it though.

To Vista users who are relying on the built-in zip/unzip Windows
software...
Quick piece of advice here. DON'T...
It was taking Vista on the order of 2-3 HOURS to unzip some of the
VT files I have been downloading from the Motherlode, and I have
found another tool for the replacement of this piece of junk in Vista.
Found Izarc, another absolutely FREE utility which simply
amazes me with it's speed and versatility. I can now unzip ALL of
the current zip formats - including the infamous 7-zip - files using
this free utility in mere seconds. Why the Vista built-in routine take
so long I have no idea, but they can't handle half of the formats
supported by THIS utility. It allows us to unzip and create the
following kinds of compressed files: 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64,
BH, BZ2, BZA, CAB, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, JAR, LHA,
LIB, LZH, MBF, MIM, PAK, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ,
UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO
Just another tip for other Brain-Dead Vista Users.
(Or, am I the only one here?)

The Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program is no longer included
in Windows operating systems starting with Windows Vista.
Just FYI... Older programs which provided .hlp files will no longer
work in Vista. Therefore, you either have to download a Vista-
compatible add-on to display these files, or you have to gripe at your
vendor to update their help systems.
