Variable Star naming

Post #1by Hungry4info » 20.05.2007, 01:23

Most of the stars that are variable and have a Letter-Letter Constellation (for example AU Microscopii) are in Celestia, but without their variable star designations. Others such as HO Librae are both in Celestia, and their variable star name is present.

Is it possible that the stars without such designations in Celestia could be given them?
Current Setup:
Windows 7 64 bit. Celestia 1.6.0.
AMD Athlon Processor, 1.6 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics

I guess the issue is finding a set of cross-references between the Hipparcos catalogue and whatever catalogue you want to implement in Celestia. Otherwise it's a lot of tedious shuffling through 120,000 SIMBAD pages.

There are cross-references between HIP and several other catalogues (e.g. HIP-HD, HIP-Bayer, some of which are present in the Hipparcos catalogue itself) but I haven't come across a Hipparcos-variable star one. Then again, it might be possible to use the script query facility on SIMBAD to output a cross-reference.
