Hello
How is possible to run Celestia in other language?
My friend has translated it to georgian, but we dont know how to use this file (1), where to submit (2), how to compare (3), how to access cvs/svn repository base (4), how to maintain this direction and etc (4)
We want to bring this program in georgian schools next month, its a good thing(tm) i think...
So, what should we do for now?
sorry for my broken english

Hello G.
There are two files you can edit to spell words in your language. :
C:\CVS3\celestia\src\celestia\res\celestia.rc
C:\CVS3\celestia\src\celestia\celestiacore.cpp
_________________________________________________
The first file makes words for the menus :
C:\CVS3\celestia\src\celestia\res\celestia.rc
POPUP "&Navigation"
BEGIN
MENUITEM "Select &Sol\tH", ID_NAVIGATION_HOME
MENUITEM "Tour G&uide...", ID_NAVIGATION_TOURGUIDE
MENUITEM "Select &Object...", ID_NAVIGATION_SELECT
MENUITEM "Goto Object...", ID_NAVIGATION_GOTO_OBJECT
______________________________________________
The second file paints words over the stars and planets :
C:\CVS3\celestia\src\celestia\celestiacore.cpp
case 'F':
addToHistory();
flash(_("Follow"));
sim->follow();
break;

Unless I'm out of the loop, Gregorian, is not a language... Are you talking about the gregorian calandar, gregorian chant, time period? LOL... If this is a langauge, please tell me; I am majoring in Linguistics
I have been interested in converting Celestia to Arabic, PM or email me with your progress...

I think he wrote "georgian"...
What version of Celestia a you running? At the moment, only the KDE version supports translations, the GTK/Gnome versions do not.
If you are using KDE and the language is set correctly for KDE, Celestia should be using the correct .mo file with no extra effort. Depending on the installation prefix of celestia, the .mo file needs to be installed in a path like
/usr/share/locale/ka/LC_MESSAGE/celestia.mo
Hope that helps,
steffens

If you have a translated version of the celestia.pot file, send it to celestia-i18n _at_ teyssier.org, I'll commit it and it will be available in the next release.
To use the file now, you have to compile it first:
Then copy it to $KDEDIR/share/locale/ka_ge/celestia.mo
Current status of the translations is available here.
To use the file now, you have to compile it first:
Code: Select all
msgfmt -o ka_ge.gmo ka_ge.po
Then copy it to $KDEDIR/share/locale/ka_ge/celestia.mo

It's actually LC_MESSAGE, not LC-MESSAGE.
You can run an strace to see where it looks for the locale file:

Ok, let's take this from the start.
You didn't give us much information about your system:
- which system are using? I assumed Linux, if you are indeed using Linux, which distribution?
- under Linux there are 3 different versions of Celestia: KDE, GTK and GLUT
- which release of Celestia are you using? 1.3.2, 1.4.0? i18n support was introduced in 1.4.0
Pre-requisites for i18n to work are:
- Linux
- KDE or GTK interface
- release 1.4.0 or later
Steps to install a new language:
1 - compile the catalog file with msgfmt
2 - copy the gmo file to PREFIX/share/locale/CC/LC_MESSAGES/celestia.mo
where PREFIX is the installation prefix of Celestia and CC the two letter language code.
Note that i18n support will be added to the Windows and Mac OSX versions of Celestia in the next release.

That's a bit strange since it includes catalog files. In GTK menus and diaglogs aren't translated but the core should be.

Perhaps he forgot to substitute CC by the proper 2 letter language code! in your directory example above
Things actually work for me. But as of now Celestia looks unattractively inhomogeneous and certainly NOT "Christophe: simply a nicer and more consistent experience" .
Reason: the English menues together with the German overlays on the canvas. So with a German Desktop (which I don't use, of course ), it would look pretty bad: English menues in a German environment and again German stuff in the canvas overlay. But I suppose this is all work in progress...

Ok, then you'll have to wait for Chris' code to load the proper resource file, or you can rebuild with the translated resource file produced by the po/translate_resources.pl script.
And while you're at it you can translate the remaining 136 strings in de.po
