ATTENTION!

Post #1by Hungry4info » 06.11.2005, 21:25

I have a really big goal, but I need help doing it.
Why only have stars in one part of the galaxy, when the ENTIRE GALAXY could be filled with stars?
Is there a generator for such a thing?, because I dont want to have to write a WHOLE lot of scc files (I think that's what they're called). If there isn't a generator, can somebody make one? please!?
I have looked around in the Forums for something dealing with allowing stars to become visible past that 20 thousand something light year radius. (not exactly sure how big it is). I've asked on the forums before, but never got an answer. HOW DO I GET STARS PAST THAT CERTAIN DISTANCE WHERE THEY DISSAPEAR?.

If, and when I finish adding stars to the -other- side of the galaxy, and for all of the galaxy for that part, ill upload it onto the Celestia Motherlode. But I cant do that as long as there's not a way to put stars really far out.

If this works out well, I'm thinking about filling the Andromeda Galaxy up with stars too, and maybe the LMC and SMC.

First, a subject line that just says "ATTENTION" is really annoying. Please don't do that in future.

Second, you can't put stars past 16,000 ly from Sol because of a software limitation. There have been ideas suggested (using different 'origin' points for each 16,000 ly radius sphere for example) but AFAIK nothing has come of them. Til then, sorry, but you can't do it.

Third, we don't have data for all the stars in the galaxy, so about 99% of it would be fictional. Plus, it's a ridiculously huge goal. I can't even load up 230,000 asteroids and you want to make an stc of a few billion stars?!

Very well, "ATTENTION" shall not be used any longer.
Thanks for the info about the software.
I knew that most of the star locations would be false, made up, and so fourth, but it was just for the sake of completeness for a 'pretend unvierse'.
And i didn't think about how long that would take to load. My computer takes 30 minutes to load the 2 million star database, and considering 100 billion stars in the Milky way, that would be 30 minutes x 50,000 = 1,500,000 minutes. 2.853 years!, goodness, I didn't think about that.

Thanks for the input.

(You said elsewhere : "What exactly is VSOP87 anyway?" - - - you really have not been paying attention in past years have you ? )

But, just in case you think I'm 'getting at you' I agree with the rest of your post :--

For someone who supposedly doesn't like "condesention" (sic), you sure like butting in with your own condescending "words of wisdom" don't you? The subject on this thread was addressed four days ago, why exactly did you feel the need to poke me with patronising comments that added no real content?

(You said elsewhere : "What exactly is VSOP87 anyway?" - - - you really have not been paying attention in past years have you ? )

Again, more condescension  - VSOP87 isn't remotely obvious to anybody. Hell, I took an orbital dynamics MSc course written by one of the guys who wrote one of the textbooks on the subject and I've never heard of it.

patronising ?
Well you are the authority !
No, four days is explained by the fact that (A) I dont live my life here
(B)More relevant : my pal BT has denied me access cos of noisy line to dial-up for two days
Now, of course, when I return I needs must see what my pals&chums have been up to,,, !

please dont assume that we all live by the second nor by the queens english

Really , you missed VSOP87 ? tsk tsk !!

Ptarmigan,

despite being aware of Malenfants identity ;-) , I wholeheartedly support his reaction against your more than inadequate <condesention warnings>!

Almost all your contributions to this forum consist of this sort of unproductive rhetorics, be it directed against me or Malenfant or somebody else. How about something for a change that others can enjoy or use in their Celestia projects...??

Has it escaped your attention that I only criticize others who, themselves criticize others ?
Think about all the other folk here present with whom I have no issue.

(a) you have , obviously, no knowledge about what I have offered before you even arrived here
(b) I am humble enough to know that when I have created something ( for my own pleasure and to learn the techniques and software involved) that I can review the most excellent contributions of for example ( and not to exclude others, these just occur of the top of my head) Selden, Jestr, Grant, Toti, DonEdwards, Shrox, (and other long lost contributors), that I I can review dispasionatly, my own potential contribution and know that it is not needed !

Hmm (edit later) I think I might have included EvilDrGanywhtsit in that list 'cept he kind of jumped ship in a fit of pique, not an unusual reaction to your attacks ( remember that (female) programer that you persued relentlesly till she went AWOL ?)

And thus you become someone who criticises others. You joining the fray doesn't help matters at all, it only makes it worse.

Yeah... that Evil Dr Ganywhatsit guy? That's me. Figured a fresh start here was in order, after a few proverbial deep breaths away from the place for a while. Notice I haven't really butted heads with Fridger while I've been Malenfant? I don't particularly intend to start again either.

Meanwhile, you've again resurrected a thread for no apparent reason, seemingly just to annoy people. Regardless of what one thinks of Fridger, he's contributing a hell of a lot more than you are to Celestia right now.

So how about you can the santimonious crap, stop trying to reopen old wounds, and either start contributing something useful and constructive yourself or just appreciate what everyone else is doing and stop trying to pass judgement on others?

**chuckles softly** I had it figured after a couple of days. But I figured it wasn't my place to mention it....

Surprisingly, I didn't pick up on that right away. I don't often pay much attention to links in sigs or addresses for posted images. A shame, considering that my sigs usually have links in them as well **laughs**

I did not resurect it, I visited the forum again and saw that he was again spending his valuable time doing nothing usfull ( sauce and ganders ??) so I replied.. And you are not continuing the resurection I suppose ? Ha!
just appreciate what everyone else is doing
I do, I thought I made that clear ? Do you want me to list more names that I appreciate ?

and stop trying to pass judgement on others?
and that is exactly what t00fri and you were doing that started all this !

Ok,, I'll stop now if you will
Anyway that is quite enough of my time wasted for this month and I am bored, bye.

Critique by itself is nothing bad if presented in an intelligible manner. It can in fact be very constructive.
I think Malenfant has recently been doing an excellent job trying to help some new posters to a more profitable way of posting. Also he effectively helps to avoid that some post all that big nonsense in the Astronomy & Physics board...
This is often related to criticising initial attempts but eventually leads to a much improved final result.

Think about all the other folk here present with whom I have no issue.

Since many don't even know you... ;-)

Here I would be curious, since I am one of the most senior members of this community besides Chris himself. You only joined ~2 years later, Jan 2 2004. So what have you offered to this community, besides cynical and agressive rhetorics??

Bravo! I admire someone who, as a matter or principle, always criticizes themselves when criticizing others.

I was going to criticize only those forum members who do not criticize themselves, but I gave up because I couldn't decide whether or not one particular member of the forum belonged in this set. ;)

Something tells me I should print this out and frame it! ;)

But seriously, thanks :).

Yes he does, so do I.

Me >(a) you have , obviously, no knowledge about what I have offered before you even arrived here
His lordship > Here I would be curious, since I am one of the most senior members

you would like to think,
yada yada yada trumpets, you are no such thing
Consider my refs to Shrox, your arrival here and your hounding of a certain lady programer, some of our memories are quite long and it is not only EDG that can change his name
Silly t00fri.

> of this community besides Chris himself. You only joined ~2 years later, Jan 2 2004.

see above
and please dont bring Chris into this, you are not in the same league as him.

Must you continue this,
have you no better things to be doing ( as you keep telling us ) no wonder Chris takes to the mountains from time to time.

EditOh and by the way, good bye, I hope you continue in happiness in your presumed seniority

Note to Seldon,
dont worry I'm done with this.
