Celestia and Orbiter

Post #21by Ronald Johnson » 16.02.2002, 12:52

:? My intent was not to start a grade school argument over Windows and Linux. I was so impressed by Celestia that I thought if it was turned into something else then what it is, it would only diminsh it. I could really care less what the creater of it does with it. I'm not a member of the Microsoft Fan Club, or do I wish to become a member of Ubi Soft's either, either one sucks as far as I'm concerned. Little arcade space shooters are a dime a dozen, so making one out of Celestia is no big deal. Besides, some 10 year old will beat the game in 30 minutes and throw it on the shelf and forget about it. (Even if it looks like Celestia) Someone will come along with something better, and Celestia will be forgotten. That's not what I want to happen, but that's life, so take your Linux and get over it!

i found an old game in my collection called mictrosoft space simulator, it was made about '92, '93, and sounds like just what you're talking about, there were missions like 'appollo 11' and 'flight to mars 2011', it had terrible graphics but there were over 30 craft including shuttles, sattelites, and futuristic ships.

Yes I remember Microsoft's space simulator. It was ultimately disappointing. I think many people have their own exciting visions of a space flight simulator. What I am shooting for is a basic framework for anyone else to use, much like Celestia is now. A basic sim that can work seamlessly with Celestia as an add-on and allow the community at large to add and customize it to their own concepts, adding their own ships and whatever else. It will also be cross platform and open source.

At the heart of it, it must have a simulator that balances realism with processing speed. In addition, I would like it to possess basic flight control; macros for programmed flight, and an easy to use navigation system.
