ElPelado,

praesepe is still working on his 3D mesh. Please be patient. The flat textures from my Web site are *not* what you need for his mesh. He'll br providing the appropriate textures with the mesh.

If you want to display a flat picture while we'er waiting for the 3D mesh, then please follow my instructions for installing a "billboard". They're on the Web at http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/billboard.html

Here's just another update. I corrected the orientation a bit more and added the nebula labels. One thing that I've noticed is that other pictures of the horsehead nebula are much redder than mine (i.e. the one that selden used in his billboard). I'm guessing if I am using the true colours.

praesepe,

The intensity and balance of colors is determined by how sensitive the detector is to different wavelengths and what kinds of post-processing were done. To the naked eye, for example, it's all very pale with just a hint of color. The pictures I used were made using long exposures on a particular brand of color film. CCD images are different again, since they are more sensitive to red than to blue.

I think it'd be reasonable to find a picture you like and color-balance your models to look like it. Of course, many of us would like to know which one that is so we can criticise your choice and how well you matched it :)

Ok, here's a modification of the nebula. It has the same texture but with the red levels retouched, let me know what you think ;)

I preferred the original one . . . The color on the redder version seems oversaturated and clipped in the brightest regions.

Also, my impression is that the "Flame Nebula" usually is shown as being quite orange, while the emission nebula behind the Horsehead Nebula is rather red. The current colors seem to be too much alike, I think.

That file goes in the extras folder. If you have version 1.3.0 of Celestia you can just put the entire unzipped folder of this addon into the extras folder. Then you just have to add the name of that 'ExtrasDirectories" folder in the celestia.cfg file and it will work. Doing it this way is a good way to keep addons separated from all the base Celestia files.
