Hi All,
I am a registered iphone Developer and am interested in porting the source code to the iphone/ipod touch. I have used Celestia for many years and think it is an invaluable piece of software to have.
I am posting to simply ask if anyone who is also part of the Apple SDK community would like to help on this port via each person having a section to port then compiling the source at the end to build the app.
Any replies welcome.

Celestia on iphone!? Won't the screen be too small to take advantage of Celestia?? (I already find my 1680x1050 small )

It won't be used as your main Celestia viewer. It will be used for an on-the-go experience, at work or out and about. It will have to be cut down a bit however.

That's for sure! Now the question is still open even on-the-go; imagine you are in a conference, talk to guys who don't know Celestia and say:
"wait, got it on my iphone; look see the small blue dot? it's the earth; look at this magnificent 32k VT! and what about this 128k normalmap?? Incredible isn't it?? Look I point on Sirius... wait... fu%# my finger is too big so select it... etc... "
Ok, ok, this conversation is stupid but you see what I mean?
And what do you mean by "will have to be cut down a bit"?

Re: Porting to Iphone/ipod Touch
You do realise you can zoom in on the iphone right?
Cutting it down will mean keeping as many bells and whistles as I can, but realise the Power VM GPU is not exactly the worlds fastest GPU. It would run Celestia, but it won't look how an iMAC or PC will.

So in a few words, you want to hack down hundreds/thousands of hours of hard work involving high mathematic and physics ???
... you must be a VERY talented coder...
Re: Porting to Iphone/ipod Touch
Not only this, the iPhone SDK is incompatible with GPL, and you are not allowed to run scripts within you iPhone app. Try making a roguelike game first....
Re: Porting to Iphone/ipod Touch
I think this would be an excellent application on the iPhone,
and should work well, have a look at google earth that runs sweet on the screen!
If I could code this is what I'd be doing...........
