Locations summary

Post #1by gironde » 13.11.2018, 18:44

This is a preparatory file for the integration of the 64 location types.
It repeats the current configuration in Celestia 1.6.1 (excluding LUT5 / renderlocs), and the configuration that could be that of Celestia 1.7.0.
The main source is the IAU

***********************************************************
all non-existent types in Celestia 1.6.1 were requested from the 1.7.0 design team.
In the future, we should hopefully have 64 types of locations.

the types in red do not exist yet in Celestia, nevertheless we can find them in Lut5 / renderlocsBox because the program substitutes the non existent types by existing types but not used on a particular planet. The module works perfectly but is very complicated to manage. The ssc files it uses are not compatible off Lut5 because the Type property "" is changed. And if someone wants to use it, he has to change it by Type "XX".

When the 64 types, above, will be integrated in Celestia 1.7.0, their management will be greatly simplified.

Reminder of the properties of a location file (.ssc):

Location "name site" "path"
{
LabelColor [R, G, B]
LongLat [long. Lat. alt. ]
Size x or Importance x
Type "type symbol"
}

name site and path:
the name of location and the path of the object in Solar System
ex. Location "Everest" "Sol/Earth"

Labelcolor :
R red component ( 0 to 1)
G green component ( 0 to 1)
B blue component ( 0 to 1)

LongLat :
-longitude East (0 to 360) or (0 to 180 and 0 to -180)
some objects in the base of the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature site are expressed in West coordinates 0-360. The editing parameters can be modified on the site or a calculation must be made to return them in East coordinates.
Be careful, some objects are in retrograde orbit.
-latitude North (0 to 90) and South ( 0 to -90)
-altitude : usually 0 (on the surface)
the name fits on the surface of the sphere that encompasses the mesh and may have defects for non-spherical objects like asteroids or spacecrafts. The name can appear in the space according to the orientation of the object.

Size or Importance
These 2 properties have the same effect. They represent the diameter of the place in km.
They are linked to the slider that filters the location based on their size. The slider is expressed as a percentage (1 to 100).
1 for the little ones, 100 for the bigger ones. In the location files for Lut5, Size was limited to 30km (forced) so that the smallest remain accessible by the cursor to 1.

Type :
This is the shortened name of the slot category. For example "AA" is the shortcut for 'crater'.

I do not know of any other properties that are compatible with the location files.

exemple :

Location "Abu Nuwas" "Sol/Mercury"
{
LabelColor [ 0.380 0.663 0.725 ]
LongLat [ 338.81 17.63 0 ]
Size 117
Type "AA"
}

The team for Celestia 1.7.0 validated the 64 possible types of locations:
https://github.com/CelestiaProject/Celestia/commi ... 07be40bb744a0f0ff8a1bc8fc114a6

They added 4 new types:
Capital = 0x0800000000000000
Cosmodrome = 0x1000000000000000
Trench = 0x2000000000000000, // Tectonical trench
Historical = 0x4000000000000000

I do not understand why choosing 'trench' for tectonical since 'fossa' already means trench. I think it would have been better to take the term 'Tectonic' (tectonic plate) and associate the locations 'trench' with 'fossa'.

Now, if we consider that the abyssal trenchs are due to subductions of tectonic plates, there was no need to create a type 'trench' since 'fossa' already existed and could be used for trenches and plates tectonic.
Another group of locations could have been created instead.

For example, Rings for the rings of the planets
