compiling 1.4.1 on Ubuntu 6.06

Not a bug but trying to compile so I can use newest Celestia on Ubuntu

I compile with no errors both for gtk and for gnome. When I launch the program I get it's spash screen and it scolls through the loadin process as if it's going to start but then it stalls and I get this message in the shell...

GdkGLExt-WARNING **: Window system doesn't support OpenGL.

(In fact it did actually launch totally once but was sluggish so I killed it and have not been able to launch it again.)

I have nvidia drivers installed (I have a GeForce FX5200 card)

I'm new to this so please let me know if any additional info is needed to help. I didn't want to paste a flood of info if not needed.

Thanks.

What /.configure line did you use?

/.configure --with-gnome

I also tried --with-gtk

with the same result

jromer,

if you check (as root) in your shell:

ldd `which celestia`

(backward quotes!)

is there perhaps some library that was not found?
Is your openGL hardware support /really/ working correctly? E.g. does

glxinfo

give the correct output?

thank you for your info...it was just as you said, the opengl packages were installed but were not being recognized...a few tweaks at the Ubuntu forum fixed the problem. Thanks for the info to pinpoint the problem.

Thanks again!!

Hello,

I've noticed a couple of issues after building celestia 1.4.1 on Ubuntu 6.06...

I built it with the --with-gnome option

1) I'm unable to see spacecraft as mentioned in a previous thread. (the CMOD issue I guess).

http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9335

But I don't understand how to fix it after reviewing the above thread. (It's like a language I do not understand) ':?'

2) I don't seem to have bookmarks?.

Just wanted to pass this info along.

Thanks,
Jon

@1) yes, I guess so, but this you can take care of.
@2) only the KDE version has a (nice (!) standard KDE) bookmark facility. Pat Suwalski is planning to include bookmarks into the gnome version, too.

You should make sure that the following files are installed:

Code: Select all

apollo.3ds
cassini.3ds
galileo.3ds
gemini.3ds
hubble.3ds
iss.3ds
marsglobalsurvr.3ds
marsodyssey.3ds
mercury7.3ds
mir.3ds
skylab.3ds

There are no CMOD versions of these models, so the 3DS files should be installed, but "make install" does not take care of it. I consider this a bug of the makefiles but I was told that this was done intentionally to be consistent with the Windows release.
On the other hand, the Windows installation comes with these models.... :?:

thanks for the help...

I did install the .3ds files...still not rendering. I get labels etc...but no image. (In fact the .3ds files were already in the models folder because after installing, I copied my texture files from my Windows install to the Linux one.) Hopefully this wouldn't cause a problem...I don't copy over any files just add files). And as an example, I only have one Cassini model, and that is the .3ds file, so it wouldn't be conflicting with a similar file name.

I'm also not rendering any of Mars' moons or Saturn's Phoebe and Hyperion...
