With your equipment there should be NO significant slow-down. Did you set a high anti-aliasing value for your card? The best thing is to select "application controlled" for anti-aliasing.
Did you set any other parameter different from default for your card? What's your screen resolution?
Also make sure you use the latest NVIDIA drivers!

Also,
Have you downloaded/installed high resolution textures for the planets? That can have a significant impact on speed. If that is the case, I would set your resolution to medium while you move around and to high when you are very close to the planets for detail.

i wish am old (and now not in use) box was as good
i take it that you in stalled some 8k maps and at a high screen res ( 1024x768 or 2048x1526)
look around this forum for inst. on installing the virtual textures
then you should see a BIG incres in speed
also as stated make shure that your graphics driver is up to date
DO NOT USE THE DRIVER FROM MICRO$HIT --GO TO THE NiVida home page and get it there
you may nead to reboot in safe mode to get rid of the microsoft's(crippaled) version of the driver befor in stalling the nvidia driver

Why don't you just tell us what the version of your "latest" NVIDIA driver is? "I have the lastest downloads for my videocard" is a rather useless info.
How often have you (successfully) upgraded such card drivers before? Are you sure that you don't have accidentally the old MS$ driver installed? IT MUST be your fault (somewhere).
What are the fps rates you are getting away from say Earth and when you point to Earth? (switch fps display on with "`" Key )

Unfortunately, saying "I have the latest" does not tell us what version you actually have. Also, it's too easy to install it incorrectly so that it doesn't actually get installed.
What version of driver does Display Properties show?
Here's how to determine the version number:
Right-mouse-button click on the desktop away from any window. A menu should appear.
+ Select (left-mouse-button-click) the line that says Nvidia Display.
+ It should show the name of your display device. Select that.
+ Nvidia's display driver window should appear. It should have a white "pop out" menu on its left side.
+ Select the top line of the menu. It should say something like "GeForce FX 5500"
+ The right-hand grey window now should show the various software and hardware version numbers.
What does the line "ForceWare version" say?

That's an old driver version, although it should work fine. The current version is 84.21. It's available at
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
Check to make sure that hardware acceleration is enabled.
Right click on the desktop.
Select Properties (at the bottom)
Select the tab Settings (toward the right)
Select the button Advanced (at the bottom right)
Select the tab Troubleshoot (toward the right)
The Hardware acceleration slider should be all the way to the right. (Full)
"Enable write combining" should be checked.
Are they? If not, make them so, click on all the OK buttons and then try running Celestia again.

I'm not sure what you mean by saying that you "turned off" the old card.
The only way to make sure it's not in use is to deinstall its drivers and remove the card from the system. If it's a motherboard option, deinstall the drivers and disable it in the BIOS.
In principle, you can continue to use the old card, driving a second display, but people have reported problems with various 3D software if there are different models of graphics cards installed.
Procedure to disable a graphics card:
Use the Install/Remove software menu to delete its device drivers while the card is still plugged in (and powered up)
Select the Shut Down option in the Start menu
If it's a physical card,
unplug your system from the power socket in the wall *this is very important*
remove the old card
If it's a motherboard option, power the system on and select the BIOS option when it runs the self-test. Disable the graphics option. Details vary. Read your hardware manual.
plug your system back in and
boot the system.

At this point, I'm at a loss. It sounds like things should work OK.
Exactly what framerates are you getting?
As Fridger suggested, while running Celestia, type a tilde (~) to enable its fps display. Celestia will display it in the lower left corner of its window.
[edit]
Oops. Sorry, *not* a tilde. Type a "backslanted apostrophe" (`) It's usually on the same key with the tilde.
Tilde turns on and off Celestia's "console messages". Type it a second time to turn it off.
