Friends:

I installed version 1.4.1 pre 2 on my notebook and I am getting an application error. This was never a good machine for running Celestia, but previous versions used to run without errors. The error notification says:

Code: Select all

AppName: celestia.exe    AppVer: 1.4.1.0    ModName: celestia.exe
ModVer: 1.4.1.0    Offset: 000a4e7b

And there is a report with more technical information, which I post below.

The laptop is an Avratec, sporting an AMD 2000+, 512MB RAM, integrated graphics (S3 Unichrome), running Windows XP Home, kept regularly updated.

Does anybody know what could be wrong? Some change in Celestia, in Windows...?

Thanks in advance.

Guillermo

Almost invariably, crashes are due to bugs in the graphics driver. Newer versions of Celestia have new functionality which requires on bug-free drivers. You should install the most recent drivers available from the manufacturer of your notebook. They should be downloadable for free from their Web site.

You also should consider installing Celestia v1.4.1 final, although I don't think it'll help with your crash.

Please read the first section of the Preliminary Users FAQ, which is a sticky at the top of the Users Forum. It describes some workarounds for problems similar to what you describe.

Thanks, Selden. I also suspected what you say. I have checked both the manufacturer of the laptop and of the motherboard (Averatec and VIA) and I already have the latest drivers. I also tried the workarounds mentioned in the FAQ (I did that before posting, I should have mentioned it).

I will contune trying different possibilities, but if sameone want to contribute an idea, I will welcome it.

Thanks,

Guillermo

incompatibility with Pivot Pro

Celestians,

I discovered the cause of the crash that I reported earlier. It is an incompatibility with a software named Pivot Pro, which allows to rotate the display (and read from the notebook while holding it as one would hold a book). I uninstalled Pivot Pro, rebooted, and Celestia now runs fine.

I discovered the problem after reinstalling the graphics driver (the same already installed, not an update), which caused Celestia to rune fine. At boot time, Pivot pro notified that it had detected a change in configuration, and that it needed reinstalling. I ignored it at first, but finally I reinstalled Pivot Pro, and Celestia started to crash again. I am reporting this in case someone else might find it usefull.

Regards,

Guillermo
