Well i'm running 98se on a 950mhz athlon with 384 megs of ram and a viper2 video card.
Anything else about my system i don't know if i should add here.
Celestia locks up my system shortly after starting it.

try this:
Maybe the planet you have Celestia going to when you start it up has too many things orbiting it for your computer to handle, try opening your start.cel file (with notepad) and change the line with whatever planet Celestia goes to when it opens (default is select { object "Sol/Jupiter/Io" } ) to select { object "Sol" }. See if that works.
