After what I replace celestia.cfg from the general add-ons I have many problems. At the beggining it stops while traveling to the sun, before 2 seconds, it continues after half a minute. This happens when i am traveling to earth. If i replace the celestia cfg with the original one, the crashes stop but i can't use add-ons :((. What should I do???

A pause is not a crash.

A pause means that Celestia draws the same screen image for a while, perhaps several seconds, perhaps longer, but then continues after a while.

A crash means that Celestia exits and the operating system creates a popup window with an error message.

Which do you mean?

A pause usually happens when Celestia tries to load a large Addon. The pause is longer on smaller systems.

What is the exact name of the Addon that you are using?
Where did you get it?
How large is it?

Please describe your computer:
How much memory (RAM) does it have?
What kind of processor does it have?
How fast is that processor?
What kind of graphics card does it have?

it's pause, sorry.
The add-on is general add-ons from activities, archived 162 megabytes.
My computer has a 768 RAM processor, Athlon xp 2400+, ATI Radeon 9200 SE 128 mb, 80gb hdd. Why does this happen??

Dear arthurav2005

Sorry you are having problems. Don't worry ... we'll get you running the Activities in no time.!

To diagnose what is going on, first let's see if something in the celestia.cfg file is the problem.

Temporarily drag the educational-extras folder out of the Celestia Directory. Put it on your desktop. Then, launch Celestia. If there is no pause and the program launches fine, then the problem is in the extras folder. If you still get a pause, try this:

Open the celestia.cfg file with a text editor such as Notepad.

About 1/2 of the way into the file, look for the line which reads:

AntialiasingSamples 4

Comment that line out by typing a # in front of it. It should now read:

#AntialiasingSamples 4

Save the cfg file and try launching Celestia again.

If this works, the problem is solved. If you still have a big pause, let me know and we'll do something else.

I tried to do so but it didn't work. The celestia.cfg had a "#" before Autoaliasing 4. Please answer. The program is great, but I would like to use the educational activities

OK, if you took the educational-extras folder out of Celestia and the program still crashes when using my celestia.cfg file, but it does not crash when you use the original cfg file, then there is something going on in another folder, or your graphics card is the problem.

First, are you using Celestia version 1.3.2, which you downloaded from the official site? There is a new version called 1.4.0pre6. It is under development and has not been officially released yet. Is is available for download, if you know where to look. If you are using that version, I need to know that.

Let's do this:

1. Drag the celestia.cfg file that I included with the program out of the Celestia folder and replace it with the original one that came with the program.

2. Go to Earth. Move around, drag the screen, press the [Shift + R] keys to load the highest resolution textures. Tell me if you have any problem either loading the Earth or moving around it.

If you do, then the problem is not with the educational activities. It is with Celestia and your graphics card.

If you have no problem, then press the [Ctrl + V] keys together while running the program. You will cycle through several rendering paths that your computer can use to draw things with. See if any of them cause the program to crash.

Let me know what happens. We'll take it from there.
