Yes, I thought so too, but no one else replied so I thought that it must just be my monitor playing tricks on me, computer things seem to do that from time to time

Do you mean you find it odd that I should see this?
Or do you mean that it does it with you and you also find it odd ?

Well, I tried loading a bmp file in Celestia (I couldn't be bothered to convert it into jpg) once and it was flipped left-right as if it was in a mirror.

Oh! That is interesting, thanks, so it aint just me !
To tell the truth I'm not sure if I noticed the left-right thing, I was playing with a picture of my daughters rabbit ( just for fun and an excuse to learn how to do textures and how to drive TheGimp ) and superimposing hords of them on some grassland, so I was looking to resolutions and jpg artifacts in the grass when I decided to try a .bmp.
So, it is easy ( even for me !) to tell when a rabbit us right-side-up but I didn't think to look in detail at the right and left paws :) (it was a random distribution as well so I might not have noticed the left and right edges either ,, hmm,, mumble mumble,,,
Ok, thanks for that, I'll check it out later ,,,

Ooops! Looks like there's a bug in the BMP code . . . I haven't used any .bmp textures in forever, so the code hasn't been tested much. It's an easy fix, though, and will be in 1.2.5.
